Movie Reviews of As Good As It Gets

Movie Review: As Good As It Gets Gets Better Every Time
Summary: 5 Stars

Well-deserved Oscars went to Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt, and Greg Kinnear offered terrific support as well in this gem of a film. This is the kind of film that can be watched multiple times and one still finds things to enjoy in it. The Amazon review and synopsis really cover the basics of this film, but the heart of this film belongs to one line said by Nicholson, "You make me want to be a better man."

We are all victims of our circumstances and idiosyncracies at times, but we need to strive to get past them. This is typified in Nicholson's line quoted above to Helen Hunt's character and in his later lines when he barges into his psychologist's office unannounced and where he complains about such conduct until Jack cuts him off with, "You can't treat me for obssessive complusive disorders and then complain about when I committ such actions like I have a choice in the matter." Hysterical and all too true.

This is a truly moving film with real life like characters that we grow to appreciate if not love. I just love pulling this film down off my shelf to watch every so often. My wife and I love it every time we watch it. It's the kind of film that never gets old. Nicholson is reliable and believable as always, and Helen Hunt is so much better than she's often given credit for being. She is smart, beautiful, relatable, and enormously talented. Greg Kinnear really shows that he has acting chops and his career following this film has proven that his performance here was no fluke.

This movie soars on every level. This film is as good as it gets it.

Movie Review: First of all...I really liked it.
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all...I really liked it. Now I must tell you that I went in to see this movie with a poor attitude, because I don't like Jack Nicholson movies (except for "A Few Good Men" and "Wolf"). Ever since I saw Jack in the "Shining", I have thought the guy was just too psycho. Well sure enough, I found that I now like a third Jack Nicholson movie and yes...this should be known as a "Jack Nicholson" movie. Helen Hunt and Greg Kinnear were great in their respective parts, but Jack carried the day. The movie was funny in a most offensive way, serious in a very sad way, and bizarre in a Jack Nicholson way. Jack plays a guy who is just rude and offensive to everyone he meets, you feel sorry for him every so often, but those brief milliseconds pass and you go back to thinking he is just a jerk....but then even jerks have the potential for changing. Now any one of you who like to rip on others or those of you who all know a person like that, then this film is for you, but if any of you are on the receiving end of a person like this, then you'll even appreciate this film, because guess what...he does begin to change for the better...so maybe there is hope. It is not surprising that Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt both won Golden Globe awards for this film. You will definitely be glad you saw it, even if you are sitting there right now saying no way, well stop talking to yourself and go see it....you will like it. Bottom line...if you are looking for a great movie this month, then this is "As Good As It Gets".

Movie Review: Good craftsmanship. Stands up to multiple viewings
Summary: 5 Stars

It wasn't that the acting was so great. It was more that the actors fit the roles so well. I am not a huge fan of any of the main characters (well, Cuba Gooding Jr., maybe) and would not go to see a movie just because they were in it. I've never been a Helen Hunt fan, but her "too grounded in reality to deal with neurosis/nobility and grace in simplicity" character was competently protrayed. A little forced in places (I can almost pick out every retake) but that just makes the character more obvious to the less observant viewers (as if the role of waitress wasn't enough.)

Over the years I have come to appreciate the mechanics and craft of filmmaking. This movie was written, directed, acted and produced by real pros and it shows. The pacing is perfect. The wit close enough to everyday experience to lend a certain creditability. But I'd have to say it is the screenwriting that holds this good movie together.

Movies can succeed on any of a myriad different levels. Some succeed by helping us suspend reality, others by highlighting reality. "As Good As It Gets" succeeds, in part, by presenting us with images that are close enough to experience to allow ourselves to be pulled along by the story.

Not all movies are for all people. If the viewer can not connect with any of the characters or situations, then they will be disappointed or bored. The fewer the characters, the greater the risk that this will be the case. I think the producers took some risks with this movie and I'm glad they were rewarded for it.

Movie Review: Jack's THE MAN, And I mean THE MAN
Summary: 5 Stars

Jack Nicholson has for quite some time been one of my favourite actors. In As Good As It Gets he puts in a sparkling performance. It must be those mad eyebrows?

The plot evolves around Melvin (Nicholson), an obssesive-compulsive,(can't walk on a crack, has to lock the door five times every time, etc) who has a tremendous talent of saying the completely wrong thing all the time. Often very offensive things, but he just can't help himself. Well, no disresepct to Nicholson, he is perfect for the part. He looks mad, yet intelligent, he's elequent, yet abuusive. The Oscar he won was deserving. Anyway, he meets this waitress (Helen Hunt) in his favourite restaurant (again, has his own table which only he can sit at, brings his own plastic cutlery). Hunt's son is sick and in desperate need of medical attention, something he can't get without money (Mmmm...sounds familiar). You sense a connection between Nicholson and Hunt. She later comments 'when I first saw you I thought you were hansome, then you opened your mouth' Greg Kinnear plays Nicholson's gay neighbour, and you can imagine some of the names he has to call him. Kinnear puts in a fine performance, in my opinion worthy of an Oscar.

As the film progresses, the bond between Hunt and Nicholson seems to get stronger. Both are fragile people, and in the end find strength in each other. Despite Nicholson's mouth.

This is a truly remarkable film. It's extremely funny, touching and has a great cast.

Movie Review: can't say enough....
Summary: 5 Stars

Yes, this is just another review of this fantastic movie, but I have to put my word in anyway...this is such a great film! One of my top favorites...Anyone who can watch this movie and not walk away with their spirits lifted, wearing a huge smile would have to have more issues than thie films main character, Melvin Udall (a terrific and convincing Jack). I need not write about the plot, as there are a hundred other reviews here that can fill you in on that...and besides, the plot is really just an excuse for a fascinating study in human interaction. The great script, which seems lighthearted upon initial viewing, actually goes very deep into these people's lives, and there are many observations about the way that people interact with and affect the people around them. The film runs a bit long (2:12), but you won't know where the time went...the ace cast, script, production and direction all work together to engage you from the first frames to the final credits. Be prepared to laugh out loud WITH the characters, not at them, as they try to deal with the things that make their lives less-than-perfect...but also be prepared for several tearjerkers...and you won't be cheated out of a great ending either...the nearly two-and-a-half hours pays off in a romantic closing scene that lifts my spirits again and again. ENJOY!
