Movie Review: Honest-Emotional-Real
Summary: 5 Stars
Brotherhood is a documentary filmed over the course of one year that followed the lives of firemen as they work and live in their "house." The filming took place after 9/11, often referred to as "that day" or "the tragedy"--it was very subtle in its power to inform the audience of how firefighters work with and depend on each other and how "that day" affected those who remained behind. The sign in board from "that day" is set behind plexi-glass, so that they will always remember. You can observe how they use humor and depend on camaraderie to help them deal with the variety of things they have to see and handle.
Also, you see how connected firefighter's are to their immediate community. Most of the time, this aspect of firefighting is overlooked. The children from the neighborhood stop by to visit, see the truck or help the guys wash the engine. Behind the film is the underlying story: Engine 252 Brooklyn was being threatened with closure--they are centered in one of the poorest areas in FDNY. The community pulled together to save "their" firehouse. It is easy to see why people think of firefighters as heroes; this film reveals that they are quiet heroes who mop floors and clean sinks. God bless them all, everywhere.
