Movie Reviews of Arsenic and Old LaceMovie Review: As Funny and Bleak as Dr. Strangelove Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a bit lost when I read comparisons of this movie with Harvey, in which James Stewart plays an alcoholic with an invisible friend. Arsenic and Old Lace is one of the most frantic black comedies I have ever seen (killing is humorous in this movie). The presence of a character who thinks he is president Teddy Roosevelt and who buries the bodies of the victims in the basement (Panama) gives this film political overtones that, to my mind, makes it a precursor to Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove. In many ways it's darker and funnier than Dr. Strangelove. It's a great film, and it's hard to believe it was directed by Frank Capra, who also directed It's a Wonderful Life.
Movie Review: Never Gets Old! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a Truely Timeless movie, the premise is as easy to relate to now as it was 66 years ago. Filmed almost entirely on one set, it captures it's Broadway roots. The "Johnathan Brewster" character was written for, and played on the stage by Boris Karloff! I would have loved to see that! Raymond Massey does the part proud, as does Peter Lorre as "Dr. Einstien". Once the action starts, it doesn't let up till the end. I,as many, have seen this movie dozens of times, and you can't help laughing at the same jokes over and over again. If you haven't seen this, do it soon, or you might get a late night visit from Jonathan & Dr.Einstien!
Movie Review: A fantastic, classic screwball comedy Summary: 5 Stars
Growing up, I always thought of Cary Grant as the debonair, sophisticated gentlemen. That image is shattered in this fantastic comedy about Mortimor Brewster who wants to marry the girl next door, Elaine, tonight but finds out that his aunts are poisoning men with arsenic in their homemade elderberry wine. Then there is cousin Teddy who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt and is digging the Panama Canal in the basement and cousin Jonathan who is truly a homicidal maniac comes home to "visit" with the mad doctor. All this and Elaine is still waiting. This comedy is a classic and shows that Cary Grant comedic timing is perfect!
Movie Review: HAHAHAHAHAHILARIOUS! Summary: 5 Stars
If you are some morbid, overly-depressed, lonely person who has absolutely no meaning in your life, try watching this movie! Just kidding! But really, I would rate this in my Top 5 most hilarious movies. I seriously could not stop laughing! I mean, who comes up with this stuff? A brother who thinks he's Teddy Rooselveldt? Another who is a criminal and looks like Frankenstein? Two little old aunts who poison then bury lonely old men???? Any comedy lover, or any movie lover for that matter, would consider this a jewel in their collection. if you haven't seen Arsenic and Old Lace, you are really missing out!
Movie Review: the best movie ever made Summary: 5 Stars
as far as i and my family are concerned, this is the very best movie ever made! i have seen this,i don"t know how many times, and it still is just as good as the first time, every time. carey grant plays a wonderfully confused man, who really doesn't know what to do about his family. they have all gone from odd to completely looney. be sure you can sit down and watch the whole thing through, however.it would be very hard to follow if you don't.i have enjoyed watching this movie for the past 25 years.i can and do advise people to rent or buy it or steal it if they have to- it's that good
