Movie Reviews of Army of DarknessMovie Review: Army of Darkness........"Hail to the king, baby!" Summary: 5 Stars
Army of Darkness is the third part of the "Evil Dead" trilogy directed by Sam Raimi. It was released in 1993 & starred Bruce Campbell, Embeth Davidtz, Marcus Gilbert, and the more widely known Bridget Fonda. The screenplay for the movie was written, mostly, in 1988. Sadly, though, this movie didn't do so well at the box-office. Yet, with it's release on video and DVD, it's found moderate success and has also garnered a cult following like the first two movies. In my opinion, it's the best movie out of them all. It's spawned comics, videogames. It's inspired in songs and horror stories. In this installment, Ash is sent back to Medieval times in his Oldsmobile, an event caused by reading a spell from The Book of the Dead to defeat the demons from the last movie. He is believed to be the 'hero from the sky' destined to deliver salvation to mankind from the "Deadites". The only way to return to his time and stop the Deadites, according to a priest, is to retrieve the Necronomicon. This proves to be quite a task for Ash. Without giving away the rest of the movie, let's just say Ash has his work cut out for him. Will he make it back to his time and defeat the Deadites? You'll have to watch the movie and see.
Although this is a fine finish to a great trilogy, I hope it isn't the last we see of Ol' Ash. Hopefully, down the road at some point, we'll see Ash return again for another adventure.
Til then, do yourself a favor and add this gem to the rest of your collection. It's a great movie and another classic.
Movie Review: One of the most creative movies of our time! A fun treat! Summary: 5 Stars
This has always been one of my favorite movies of all time, since way back when it was out in theaters. The movie is, yes, corny. But the beauty of that is that it was intended to be in the first place! The movie is filled with perfect touches of cheapiness and campiness from the wild and crazy camera angles to the quick comically overdramatic quips of dialogue spoken by the lead character, Bruce Campbell as Ash; to the deliberately cheesy special effects in most scenes. All of this spells FUN! The movie came out in the summer of 1993 which is the same year that Jurassic Park also hit theaters. So the technology was there, the creators just chose not to use it. The result is a movie that sort of looks to spoof all of the cheap low budget horror movies of days past. It also proves a movie doesnt need fancy computer special effects to be highly entertaining. Other pluses of this movie: impressive war scenes and even better sword fighting; TONS of action and laughs (the movie never really slows down!); Great sound! Highly recommended for good Home Theater setups (especially ones with good bass!) and of course the fact that you don't need to see the 2 prequels in order enjoy this one. It is a truly excellent film and in it's own way. Every now and then we all just need to sit back and watch something fresh and different. I suggest you grab a few snacks and something to drink, and sit back and experience this delightfully campy timewaster. You'll quickly see that it is really time well spent! -DHX-
Movie Review: Army of Darkness, or S-Mart Employee of the Month Getting Medieval on Screwheads Summary: 5 Stars
Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi were at a pinnacle for this genre making this movie. Nothing comes close in my book of horror comedies. I love all their other work, but this stands the test of time well and will crack most people up whatever their age. This movie is quoted regularly at gatherings of people partying, and it makes a great party movie. AOD is a superb mix of horror movie and comedy. The first two Evil Dead movies although entertaining are mainly horror with less comedy. Many fans adore them although the third in the series was much more to my liking.
An S-Mart employee has barely escaped a horrible experience in the woods where his friends were killed and he lost his hand. He has replaced it with a chainsaw attachment and he has a double barreled shotgun as well. Driving his 1973 Oldsmobile as fast as he can he is teleported while trying to escape. He ends up in medieval times and must prove himself to the local Lord by recovering a book of the dead. What ensues is comic genius as he fights skeletons, demons, witches, and himself. Excellent DVD with some extras. If you enjoyed this catch "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" and "Hotshots! Part Deux".
P.S. I recently bought the HD DVD and it would not play on a DVD player that plays all formats, a region free DVD player, or my PC (locked up DVD player bad and it did not have eject button so that I had to disconnect cables in order to use the PC). I suggest you stay away fron it.

Movie Review: A fun adventure film! Summary: 5 Stars
Although in order to really know what is going on here, it helps to see the previous film in the Evil Dead Trilogy, this one is able to stand alone as a horror/adventure film. Ash, this time, is back in the 14th century and must get back to the present. Don't ask me why, really. I guess he must really just like being a clerk at S-Mart. Once again, we see the fighter of demons, Ash, do what he does best. But, now, unfortunately, the average man, Ashley, has developed an attitude. Although there are people wiser than he, he won't listen to them. Thus, he can't seem to get the phrase "Klaatu barrata niktu" right, and winds up being the cause of a great deal of trouble(understatement). The images of the Army of Darkness are great and brought back to my mind the old movie Jason and the Argonauts. This skeleton army does produce a really creepy image. Once the army is defeated, Ash(ley) once again fails to do what he is told, and totally ruins his trip home. But what did we expect? The movie is left pretty much open-ended in case there were to be a sequel, which so far the people involved with the film say there will not. So, for now, the Trilogy stands as it is. This is not a scary movie, but it is a neat little adventure film. And that is really all that it needs to be.
Movie Review: Best horror-comedy ever and the best Evil Dead movie Summary: 5 Stars
Army of Darkness comes across as a mindless film with a very weak plot and that's what makes it so great. If you missed its predecessors I'll give you a short plot summary: Ash and friends go to a cabin in the woods of Tennessee when a strange force awakened by a book called the Necronomicon possesses them one by one. Ash must kill off his friends and stop the demonic forces. With the help of a stranger who translates missing pages from the book, the evil is banished but it also opens a vortex that su**s Ash back in time to the 14th century. Now, he must recover the original Necronomicon and find a way to get back home. This movie is quite hilarious. This movie has a lot that the first two Evil dead movies lacked. There's even more action and adventure in Army of Darkness and the fact that it's very light on gore makes it all the more enjoyable. The best thing about this movie is Bruce Campbell, who plays Ash. In the first Evil Dead movie, his acting wasn't very convincing. It wasn't until Evil Dead 2 that we learn his great talent is physical comedy. Army of Darkness shows even more physical comedy with great one-liners. Campbell was definitely born to play Ash. If you want to have a good time, watch Army of Darkness.
