Movie Review: Strong Anime Addition to FUNimation's Stable
Summary: 4 Stars
Combining strong graphics and good music, this anime can be "read" on more than one level. I really think that those who dismiss shows like Aquarion as for the immature (i.e., YA or younger) are doing both the Anime and its creators a disservice. And if you had asked me to watch an Anime show a few years ago, I think I would have been in their number. But having in the past year taken the plunge, I find that I'm amassing quite a collection of shows.
As others have mentioned this series belongs to a military sf genre. The heroes are Mecha pilots. Mecha are large war machines that can combine to become an even more powerful force. There are a number of different ways they can combine, with different fighting abilities displayed in each combination.
The theme of the power of cooperation in defeating evil, is one that is frequently seen in quest type adventures from The Lord of the Rings to many role playing games. The evil being defeated in this series arises from the past. The Shadow Angels had been defeated before in some distant time. Now it seems that both elements from that past time and the present must come together to combat this re-emergent threat.
