Movie Reviews of Antonia's Line

Movie Review: Very Intriguing
Summary: 4 Stars

This German film takes you to a village where you learn about the life and line of one woman and her brood. It is a very charming film that was very interesting to watch. The only thing I did not like about it was the constant theme of rape that arose. I found that to be upsetting, even though, in the end the bad guy was done in, it didn't matter, it was still upsetting.

Other than that, this is a good movie. Not as pleasant as French films, but still good nonetheless.

Movie Review: Greatly overlooked
Summary: 4 Stars

The story is very well told and I felt such a connection to the characters in this movie, I almost felt as if I lived their lives. You feel every emotion during this movie from warmth and love to wrath and hatred. The acting is superbly done. My husband even enjoyed this movie despite that it is a movie focused on the empowerment of women. I believe this movie is a diamond in the rough and greatly overlooked.

Movie Review: Sophisticated Awkwardness
Summary: 4 Stars

While the movie is an amazing movie that I feel any film student should watch, I do believe that not most will and should be able to handle it. There's a rape scene and a few sex scenes.

The movie is a great coming of age film in a later in life experience. If you're looking for a great German film with aspects you can relate to, watch this movie.

Movie Review: Well Done but Too Polemic at Times
Summary: 3 Stars

As many reviewers have already pointed out, Antonia's Line is a film that celebrates women, their power and independence, their healthy condition that they enjoy when they are free from men, their superior spirituality to the male gender. Upon a second viewing, I found the film a bit annoying, painting women as smug earth mothers, and men as testosterone-deranged crackpots who must be kept at a distance. Thus one women "allows" a man to impregnate her but, deeming him an unnecessary presence, wants to raise her child on her own. The only men that are looked at with kindness in this film are emasculated neurotics, professorial, melancholy eunuchs, and the like. The polarity between women as spiritual earth mothers and men as troglodytes is a grotesque oversimplification and impedes the film's noble attempt to question male-dominant roles and how those roles have subjectated women.

Movie Review: strong women do not a strong movie make ...
Summary: 3 Stars

a good soap opera about a single mother in a small town in post-ww2 holland, and the lives of her family and friends over half a century. worthy.
