Movie Reviews of Antonia's Line

Movie Review: My favorite film of all time!
Summary: 5 Stars

Although I'm not a fan of subtitles these days, this is a classic film that stands out as an exception. Set in the Dutch countryside, Antonia returns to her village from the city to raise her daughter. The film spans maybe 50 years and 4 generations of Antonia's lineage, both literal and figurative because, after all, it takes a village to raise a child. The film is a beautiful fable that illustrates that family is not just your given family (blood relatives), but also comprised of your chosen family--the community around you who are your friends, neighbors, teachers, and for better or worse, also, the town misfits. Each one of these individuals help shape an individual into who he/she becomes as an adult. While the film's theme is matriarchy-based, the message is universal. A feminist classic that I would give to every tween in my life--especially the girls.

Movie Review: Absolute masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

Antonia's line is one of my all-time favourite films. I was very surprised when it won the Academy Award as it was far too risky to seduce the sometimes narrow-minded Academy members. As other people said this is a celebration of life and its circle showing some very interesting characters and clever attitudes about sex and religion. Some accused it to be too feministic, but in my opinion this is a film directed by a woman about four generations of women, and as a man, I never felt insulted. All it shows is pure respect and tolerance. An absolute gem to enjoy again and again. Don't be afraid of the subtitles, you are in front of one of the most beautifully deep films of recent times.
Enjoy... Thanks for reading.

Movie Review: Antonia's Line
Summary: 5 Stars

This Oscar-winning chronicle features dramatic vignettes about an odd assortment of female relatives living together in a small Dutch village, and tackles themes such as prejudice, sexual violence, and the courage of living free of traditional social strictures. In the absence of male approval, women like Antonia and Danielle are happily self-sufficient, independent creatures, a quality reinforced by their aversion to marriage. With an excellent ensemble cast (including Mil Seghers as a misanthropic tutor named Crooked Finger) and well-realized elements of magic realism, this is an endearing tale about a boldly feminine bloodline.

Movie Review: Splendid
Summary: 5 Stars

I am kind of iffy about foreign films that are subtitled because you have to pay an extra sensitive amount of attention to the movie. But this film I couldn't revert my eyes away from the screen for one second. Watching the movie in it's undubbed natural language enhanced it.

This movie is about four generations of families and their lives. It is very very well made. It has humor, drama, and action all in one movie. Everything flows together nicely. And the storyline is perfect. You grow to love Antonia's family.

This is probably the best foreign movie I have seen.

Movie Review: A movie to watch over and over again!
Summary: 5 Stars

After watching Antonia's Line with a group of friends, I couldn't wait to view it again. In fact, I rushed home and ordered it from Amazon. I have joyfully shared it with others. It is an uplifting and thoroughly enjoyable movie. Not only is the story extremely appealing, but the cinematography is outstanding. The Dutch actors are so finely cast. Surprisingly, the subtitles do not impede one's enjoyment of the movie. I absolutely love this movie and want to share it with the world.
