Movie Reviews of Another Day In ParadiseMovie Review: Great ideas, sloppy execution Summary: 3 Stars
The expositions of the characters and relationships were more interesting than the characters themselves. Griffith's character is the most interesting because she talks the least. Woods excessive emoting - overly praised in the director's commentary - is exhausting, but this might be believable for the junkie he portrays. What is harder to believe is the transformation in his personality: Near the beginning, he is wild and crazy in a humorous sort of way; by the end of the movie, he has become a homicidal maniac. Perhaps we are supposed to attribute more significance to his reference to these changes from alcohol and the near-death encounter. If so, we have to reach far to accept this explanation, particularly because he has no dialogue which truly reveals his "bottom line" - what he feels most deeply, or his code of values - either before or after this transformation. In addition to these flaws, the characters are never really likeable and the editing is sloppy. Perhaps this is the consequence of the director's method, allowing everyone to do their own thing. This is an interesting movie nevertheless. The DVD is better than average because of the extras. (I believe the mediocre video quality is resulted from poor camera focus rather than poor digital transfer.)
Movie Review: MOM AND DAD Summary: 3 Stars
Coproduced by James Woods and directed by Larry Clark, ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE relates the story of two couples of heroin addicted thieves. Nothing new under the sun even if Larry Clark's camera trembles a lot in order to make us feel the stress of the characters. Needles are clean, the drug easy to find and the money easy to win. So, what's the point ? I'm too tired to try to discover the hidden intentions of the director so I'm ready to concede that the relation between the middle-aged couple (Woods-Griffiths) and the younger one is highly symbolic. You see, Woods and Griffiths cannot have children so... ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE is the living proof that you can have great actors, great music and money to spend and nevertheless present an average movie. It's the big problem of the nineties. Great images but no ideas at all. A DVD which is already forgotten.
Movie Review: Not bad but inferior to its influences Summary: 3 Stars
This film was well-acted overall (Woods is particularly by good) but there's nothing in it that hasn't been done better in other films. Not a bad rental, if you're interested in films of this genre, though. Just don't expect the kind of lasting impact you get from a film like "Drugstore Cowboy", still the finest outlaw/drug film I've ever seen.
Movie Review: Well-acted drama Summary: 3 Stars
This ironically-titled movie is almost too intense to bear. The story about drug-addict criminals is realistic, but all the characters are foul-mouthed and repugnant. If a film could be rated X for profanity alone, this would receive the "honor," since almost every sentence in the dialogue is laced with profanity of the worst sort.
Movie Review: Thoroughly Depressing Summary: 3 Stars
Don't watch this movie if you are prone to bouts of depression - it may well push you over the edge. Not badly acted for this genre of film, but just too much of a downer. NOT for the kiddies!
