Movie Reviews of Anna Karenina (1948)

Movie Review: Deceptive advertising, again
Summary: 4 Stars

At this point I'm sick of these old black and white films being advertised as being finally colourised when they are the same old second-rate black and white crude film stock of the nineteen forties put on a fancy disc and in a fancy colourised box. If it ain't colourised by now I don't want it. The film still begins and ends as I last saw it. Thus, there is nothing new here.

This film is pretty good for Vivien, who L. Oliver thought was at her most beautiful during this time in her life. But, it isn't Citizen Kane. Hell, I'm not so sure Citizen Kane is what everyone believes it is anymore. Movies are movies, and that's all, they're not holy religious relics!

Personally, I like this film for Vivien and Vivien only. Everything else surrounding this small tale in Tolstoy's magnum opus is nothing but his Communist Manifesto.

In the book, Tolstoy uses the story of Anna to illustrate how the bourgeoisie and upper classes supposedly exploit the working class, except, this film doesn't focus on those issues on purpose - rightly or wrongly so.

Forget Tolstoy's sanctimonious tome whilst watching this film. Those who made this film set Tolstoy's self-serving, opportunistic claim to political fame aside to make a film about love gone wrong. Remember though, Anna Karenina is not Dr. Zivago. Thus, watch this film only for Vivien. Watch Vivien take a horrible script and try to give the viewer a little glimpse into Anna's life - not Tolstoy's vain conceited political posturing. What she does with the script isn't all that bad. In my opinion, Vivien did a great job even though the script is thin.

Summary of Anna Karenina (1948)

Studio: Tcfhe Release Date: 04/24/2007
Vivien Leigh is a "Scarlett" woman as tragic heroine Anna Karenina, unhappily married to "colossal bore" Alexei (Ralph Richardson), who neglects her to attend to affairs of state. When Anna meets the dashing Count Vronsky (Kieron Moore), she begins an affair of her own that scandalizes St. Petersburg and leads to her ostracization from high-society circles and, in a heartbreaking scene, her beloved son. Pepe Le Moko director Julien Duvivier's 1948 adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's oft-filmed book has stretches that make the film seem as long and cold as a Russian winter night, but the ravishing Leigh as the doomed Anna keeps the fires burning. The "thoughtless and selfish" Anna is a distant relation of the willfull Ms. O'Hara from Gone with the Wind, although her ultimate comeuppance leaves no hope for "another day." This is a high-minded prestige production (Tolstoy gets his name above the title), but it offers the more simple, old fashioned pleasures of a Hollywood melodrama. --Donald Liebenson
