Movie Reviews of Ani Di Franco - TrustMovie Review: Encapsulates Her Artistic Assets To a T Summary: 5 Stars
"Trust," singer/songwriter Ani Difranco's first concert DVD release, is overstuffed with exceptional performances, up front political awareness and behind-the-scenes footage that compromises one high-quality package.
Difranco enjoys a reputation as a fine live act, and "Trust" all the more cements her status. Whether you already appreciate Difranco's music or have never heard it before, you will most certainly agree with the fervent applause of her massive crowd, filling up every nook and cranny of Washington, DC's 9:30 Club.
Shot over the course of two nights of shows, the lengthy selection of songs runs the gamut between the bare bones era of her 1991 sophomore album "Not So Soft" all the way through to present-day material, particularly focusing on 2004's "Educated Guess," arguably her most impressive record.
Accompanied by upright bassist Todd Sickafoose, her stalwart touring companion, Difranco never loses any stride in her step, strumming her acoustic guitar like it's no one else's business. With all eyes on her and the glaring spotlight making her sweat beads glisten, she applies as much fervor to performances of more bubbly material such as the bouncy "Gravel" from her critically-acclaimed 1998 album "Little Plastic Castle" to more weighty material like the liberal anthems "God's Country" and the title track to 2003's "Evolve."
A handful of the performances were filmed during backstage rehearsal. Although many music DVDs contain footage of practice sessions that are absolutely boring, Difranco and Sickafoose filmed a pre-show workout just as on target as the performances they gave before their raving crowd. The intermittence of the footage is therefore a surprisingly welcome addition to the program that spices things up.
If you are someone who appreciates honest, forthrightly political yet personal lyrics and top of the line guitar-playing, Difranco is the ideal artist for you to become acquainted with, and "Trust" encapsulates as many of her artistic assets and facets of her identity into one release as has previously been done.
Whether you are simply into live music, have always been an admirer of Difranco or are looking for a new artist to soak up, "Trust" fits your bill.
Her 15th studio album, "Knuckledown," hits shelves January 25.
Summary of Ani Di Franco - TrustIf you?ve never been introduced to the music of Ani DiFranco, let her be the first to say "Hello, and thank you for coming" in this 90 minute live concert DVD of her Washington, DC shows in May, 2004. Joined for the occasional song by noted New York guitarist and sideman Tony Scherr (Bill Frisell, Sex Mob), Ani and upright bassist Todd Sickafoose take you on a musical journey there and back again. Unlike Ani?s 2002 Render release, this DVD is a complete concert experience, shot over two days and seamlessly integrated by Danny Clinch, renowned photographer (Rolling Stone, Spin, The New York Times Magazine) and filmmaker (Ben Harper?s "Pleasure and Pain," 2003 Bonnaroo documentary "270 Miles From Graceland." With the help of cinematographers JoJo Pennebaker, Paul Greenhouse, and Elia Lyssy, Clinch captures the experience of these two days from all sides with a visual style as eclectic as Ani?s guitar tunings. This live DVD features four new songs Callous, Manhole, Modulation, and title track, Knuckledown, all from Ani?s new studio album scheduled for release in January 2005. Including over twenty songs from the days of Not So Soft to her most recent Educated Guess, this film evokes the community and intimacy of your favorite Ani show. With words from Congressman Dennis Kucinich and an eye on the recent Vote Dammit! tour, Trust illustrates Ani DiFranco?s belief that the political is personal while she deftly draws you into a world of sound and substance.
