Movie Reviews of Andy Kaufman: The Midnight Special

Movie Review: Dhrupick gives his thoughts
Summary: 5 Stars

To tell you the truth I just ordered this title today, 1/11/00 I also ordered the other tape, the original special that didn't air for two years after it was taped because it was too off the wall. It's on back order right now. I didn't get Tank you Veddy much, because I heard it was terrible. I've been interested in Andy for about 3 years, and I've been watching Taxi for about 6. It wasn't the movie that sparked my fascination with him, That came years before. I've never actually seen a whole special with him in it. I've seen clips in biography's and specials about him on Comedy Central, A@E, MSNBC, and E! I have both books written about him, Andy Kaufman Revealed! by Bob Zmuda(I recommend it) and Lost in the Funhouse by Bill Zehme(halfway through it, good so far. I wouldn't say I'm really obsessed with Andy Kaufman, at least not so much as Andy was obsessed with Elvis. I guess it's perfectly healthy to know just about everything about a person I've never met. Anyway, the movie, Man on the Moon, named after the REM song was real good I thought. The only thing I didn't like was there was nothing in the movie that I already didn't know, I didn't learn anything new about Andy, just the same things I've heard about and seen for the past 3 years. I sure the two tapes I ordered are going to be great. That's all for now.

Summary of Andy Kaufman: The Midnight Special

The big mystery about Andy Kaufman's work is in trying to figure out what's serious, what's an act, why he is doing what he's doing, and whether he even knows the differences himself. His performances are among those rare examples where you feel extremely uncomfortable watching them, but at the same time you can't pull yourself away because it's hysterical in a twisted and bizarre sort of way. \n "Andy Kaufman's Midnight Special" is an episode of "Burt Sugarman's Midnight Special", hosted by Wolfman Jack, which aired on January 23, 1981. Even though this was filmed a few years before Kaufman's premature death in 1984, it's a retrospective of his work. Many of his better known characters and routines are featured, including "The Foreign Guy," Tony Clifton, "Ladies Wrestling," the ventriloquist act, and of course, Elvis. The highlight of this video is interview footage of Andy "explaining" his work. Is it real or an act? Was he a comic genius or an utter madman running loose on a TV stage? We may never know.
