Movie Reviews of Andre Rieu - Live in DublinMovie Review: Total Family Delight Summary: 5 Stars
The only word for this performance is MAGNIFICENT!
Movie Review: Just BRILLANT Summary: 4 Stars
Andre Rieu & the Johann Strauss orchestra in Dublin is just fantastic and outstanding, probably more than in previous DVDs. Dublin is my Alma Mater and I grew up in Medical School there at the time John Sheehan & the Dubliners were peaking in popularity after their huge success at The Royal Albert Hall,London. It was nice to see the usual lively John(as guest artist here) again, but with a different beard colour, taking Andre and the Johann Strauss orchestra along in 'Marino waltz'(John's own composition) & 'Irish Washerwoman'.I felt the same contagious, pleasant and cheerful shivers as the audience had during these interpretations.
I recognised and loved the short sceneries on the DVD like 'The Temple Bar & the Guinness pints' 'O'Connell bridge over the Lifey river,Grafton street and Trinity College, the greenery of 'The Emerald Isle' etc.
All the other interpretations are a very carefully chosen repertoire of well known tunes in Ireland and the usual 'Andre at his best' violin/orchestra favourites . The interpretation of 'The Waltz of all the waltzes of the world' was beautifully done with a most remarkable humourous ingenuity 'A la Andre' added to it.
My personal five star tune 'The last rose' is well interpreted as an entirely instrumental number though I missed Suzan Erens' vocal interpetation. I am a bit disappointed that Suzan did not interprete this one or any other number in this concert though she is seen in the choir at the back of the orchestra. As we have seen in previous compilations e.g. 'Flying Dutchman', Suzan is really at her best in this tune- This tune fits her and she fits the tune! She really gets locked in the audience's hearts with her vocal interpretation.
The Titanic film theme music 'My heart will go on' is indeed most appropriate in this concert in Dublin as the actual film gives us a glimpse of the Irish migration westward across the Atlantic in that tragic year of 1912.Besides, the ship had about fifteen thousand Irish workers to build it.Also, after Cherbourg, the last port of call ever for that unsinkable ship was Cobh in the South of Ireland (at that time known as Queensland). It was from there that it sailed away on the 11April1912 for its tragic end 4000 meters under the sea. Teun Ramakers and his flute comes out beautifully in conveying the appropriate emotions to the audience as he does again in 'The last rose of summer'.
The quality of the pictures and sound on an HD video player & LCD with sound surround are just outstanding though the DVD itself is not HD.
I personnally prefer a vertical listing and numbering of the various tunes on the back of the DVD box rather than the way it is written.
After this concert I feel Andre and the Johann Strauss orchestra should spread their wings to be a music ambassador to other places of the planet and lead the way ,to quote him, "To make the Planet a different place" through music. They have the necessary appropriate talents to modify the hearts & minds of their audience irrespective of age.... .
Movie Review: Top O' the Evening! Summary: 4 Stars
Andre Rieu makes it all worthwhile, and in Dublin he encounters what may be his most receptive audience. There is splendour in the songs and their renditions, and like all of Rieu's outings, he shakes the dust off previous classical orchestra experiences and manages to put on a fine show.
The selections repeat themselves from other DVD's. (Actually, the copywrite is 2003, so it is really the reverse.) However, each DVD manages to do something new and worthy that makes the repetition almost inconsequential. Andre Rieu and his orchestra are masters with their predilection for waltzes. "Thunder and Lightning," "The Marino Waltz," and the perennial favorite, "The Blue Danube Waltz" are mixed throughout the evening well. However, the distinctive feature of the evening is ethnicity, for which the maestro is so accomodating. "Hor Ich Zimbalklange" has a gypsy feel; in contrast to "The Song of the Volga Boatman," which is sombre, yet sweet. The ethnic flavor is broadened with "Espana Cani," "The Song of Olympia," and "The Chianti Song," each playfully performed. However, he is the most accomodating when he taps into the Irish tradition. One of the emotional highlights is when famous local violinist, John Sheahan, joins Andre' Rieu for a violin duo on "The Marino Waltz" and "Irish Washerwoman". Then, the Irish festiveness is prolonged with "The Red Rose Cafe". In addition, "Opera Potpourri" and the 'Titanic' theme song round out a splendid evening with a particularly enthusiastic audience.
Once again, there is plenty of entertaining and playful hijinx with this performance. It is also distinctive for the large number of violin solos the maestro performs on stage, nimbly conducting the orchestra with his bow! The orchestra itself is in fine form. If we don't see them smiling as much this time around, maybe it's because they are so enraptured in their own music. Perhaps they are playing it straight this time (except for two male members who break into singing on "Chianti Song").
When searching Andre' Rieu's DVD's, perhaps it is best to purchase 'Tuscany,' subjectively his best, first; then, 'Royal Albert Hall,' his liveliest; and then 'New Year's in Vienna,' for waltz afficionados. "Live in Dublin" showcases a fine performance and a pleasant evening, but somehow the energy or song selection somehow falls short of other DVD's (Pick! Pick! Pick!) However, this DVD is magnificent, even with the petty rating and some intangible ambiences that may be missing from the preferred three favorites.
Movie Review: Andre Rieu, '100 Years of Walz' and 'Live in Dublin' Summary: 4 Stars
I have 18 of his DVD's. Before I found you I was purchasing them from Holland direct. I wish you would supply a booklet with the DVD's as they do when purchased from Maastricht, Holland. Otherwise I am very happy with your products so far and the professional way you conduct business.
Could you send me the entire list of Andre Rieu DVD's that you stock? Thank You kindly:
Elisabeth Stolz
Movie Review: Andre Rieu, always a pleasure Summary: 4 Stars
Andre Rieu plays a violin wonderfully, and has a gret power of
comunication. In Dublin he performed some of his best know music,
and this show is easy to see and follow. But, better than this one,
are "Live in Tuscany" (Romantic Paradise) and "Andre Rieu at Schonbrunn,
Vienna", recorded in High Definition. I bought it in Brazil.
