Movie Reviews of And the Band Played OnMovie Review: And The Band Played On..and still does! Summary: 5 Stars
Maybe I'm getting more compassionate as the years add up, maybe I'm just realizing the frailty of what it means to be human. I recently bought the dvd, "And The Band Played On" from Amazon.com. It deals with the early years of the AIDS crisis and the fear that went with it. Having known several people who died from this horror, it is very hard for me to remember but harder not to.
It is a wonderful film and I cry every single time I watch it and if I were chancellor of a major university, I would make this film/DVD mandatory viewing for all sociology and social science majors. If "And The Band Played On" doesn't move an individual to fight the fight against AIDS and other immune diseases, YES I'll include Breast Cancer, Prostate Cancer, etc...then our claim in Heaven will be nothing more then an IOU slip from St Peter.
I remember those who died during those years..I will never forget them.
sent with love and compassion,
Mark Chase
Movie Review: Monkey See. Monkey Do. Monkey Dies. Summary: 5 Stars
Getting the HIV-AIDs message out was as difficult with Gay Men and Lesbians as it was to the majority of the Straight populase. This was the first TV Movie that was based upon the outbreak of HIV-AIDs. HBO really did a public service by making, then showing a story that brought the subject matter into the living rooms of America.
The storyline is acted by total professionals who deliver dynamite performances. The entire production was handled perfectly.
Details of the story are available through the "Editorial Reviews," on this page (scroll up).
If you are looking for a light entertaining diversion, this is NOT the case here. This is factual, reality based scripting and played for a strong warning to audiences, regardless of their sexual orientation.
The only other film (of this specific genre) I consider this film's equal is: "Longtime Companion."
Watch them both...
Movie Review: One of my favorite movies of all time Summary: 5 Stars
I must have seen this movie at least three or four times, and it always gets to me. I will not go into the story line here, as that has been done in detail by other reviewers. Instead, I would just like to say that this is one of those great movies which, in my view, has not received as much attention as it should have. It is not only a suspenseful and gripping account of the early AIDS epidemic, it is also a lesson in how science can be at once extraordinary, as well as petty and ferociously competitive. Based in fact, this movie also serves as an important historical document. Seeing this movie will not lift your spirits, and it most certainly doesn't paint a pretty picture of humanity, but it does leave you feeling a little wiser, and more educated about the beginnings of a disease which continues to greatly affect people and societies all over the planet. It tells a story which needs to be told, and it does it well.
Movie Review: Medical mystery and misery tour at the start of AIDS... Summary: 5 Stars
The film is well-done in all aspects, definitely worth seeing if you have any interest in the way the world began to track the AIDS epidemic back around 1980. I was a newspaper editor in Oklahoma at the time, and I remember the early news stories which first hinted that something big and bad was brewing in the gay community. Although I am straight, I have friends of that sexual preference, and in fact, one of my sister's oldest and dearest friends was an early casualty of this killer disease. Even better than this movie, however, is the source book by the late Randy Shilts, who was a journalist in San Francisco (who happened to be gay, and who happened to contract and die of AIDS eventually.) The non-fiction book is huge, but it is gripping. AIDS is still with us, and is a heterosexual scourge in Africa, so this story is not as dated as one might think.
Movie Review: The world needed to know Summary: 5 Stars
THis is probably one of my all time favorate movies. In the early 80's no one knew a damn thing about AIDS or it's impact, which led to alot of ignorance and misconceptions. but AIDS didn't just effect the gay community, it also effected people who received a blood transfusion, and had an even bigger impact on hemophiliacs. atleast 80% of hemophiliacs contracted the diease through tainted blood products including my brother. i was one of the extremely lucky 20% who didn't contract it, because my doctor INSISTED i only receive heat treated factor. this movie covers EVERY aspect of the outbreak leaving nothing taboo. i'd reccomend it for anyone, but especialy to somone who lost a loved one to this. But be warned, i can't watch the end montage without crying. it got 5 stars cause it's the highest they have..i would have gladly given it 10
