Movie Reviews of And Then There Were None

Movie Review: Improves With Each Viewing
Summary: 4 Stars

Here's another movie that I never felt was anything but fair, but I kept giving it more chances and every time I did, my rating went up. It seems to get better and better with multiple viewings, especially now that Image has given us a better DVD transfer.

If you didn't know any of these actors, the movie would be "fair" at best. You can bet if the story were re-done today, it would be faster moving. As it stands, its okay but a film in which 10 people are invited to an island and are systematically murdered one by one, should make for a tense thriller. Here, it's more of a study in paranoia, but that's interesting to view, too.

I especially enjoy watching Walter Huston and Barry Fitzgerald banter back-and-forth and I was glad to see the most annoying character (can't say) be done with first!

The ending to this mystery was well-done, too, and not something you're likely to solve. So, if you like the old classic mysteries, this should be appealing. It features an interesting cast of young and old actors, male and female.

Movie Review: Stands the test of time... a lesser known classic...
Summary: 4 Stars

Outstanding director + outstanding cast = ensemble performance to keep you guessing: who is the killer?

For movie buffs: the cinematography is in keeping with a stage play rather than a movie, adding an element of claustrophobia. Roland Young delivers a performance the opposite of his famous "Topper" role, while Richard Haydn (Sound of Music) is priceless as the drunk butler. But all of them may surprise...

For Christie buffs: the movie follows the book closely - up to the end, which was a little too depressing for moviegoers of the era. Nonetheless this is definately one of the better adaptations.

I am satisfied with the VCI edition of And Then There Were None at the price, and have seen it 3 times since it arrived.

Movie Review: Wonderfully Done, Well Preserved
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great movie with great performances. Moreover, though, the DVD edition shows great "tender loving care" for its subject. The sound track is crisp and clear - no "rising hiss" or annoying back noises. They took this one frame by frame to restore it.

The special features are great too. I learned much about how Walter Huston was recruited into this film, and how the leading man/leading lady combination dictated Rene Clair's decision to rewrite Christie (a mistake).

For Agatha Christie lovers, and for fans of the 1930s. You get a better show than you probably would have in a movie palance in 1939! And reflect, too, on the "murder in a teacup" flava: people in a big house isolated on an island that looks like a miniature Alcatraz, cut off from outside communication, and they still dress for dinner...gotta love it.

Movie Review: Don't like the ending
Summary: 4 Stars

I read the novel and it was brilliant. What about the movie? It is right if someone said that you can't compare a book and a film. They stand in diffrent medium. It's like you compare a fried chicken and an orange juice. The movie's just like the novel. But,you know, old movies usually had short duration. So, you wont find any detail emotion of each characters and it had no time to built a mystery as thrilling as the book. And some jokes were included. It was OK. The screenwriter could write all the important parts of the novel into a 1,5 hour film. But the screenwrite made an alternative ending that made the story had a happy ending. I just dont like this ending. The novel already had the better ending. There's no need to make a twist by changing it.

The DVD is okay. And it's cheap. What do you expect?

Movie Review: A fine adaptation
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a classic whodunnit based on the Agatha Christie book of the same name. Its well acted by the whole cast and has a nice touch of humour thrown in as well. The opening scene, in particular is one of the wittier moments as the guests travel to the island on a boat.

There are some pretty good suspense moments and you'll be hard-pushed to workout who is the murderer the first time you see it. My only concern about the film is whether it would stand up to repeated viewings. This will probably be of little concern to ardent Agatha Christie fans, but I'm not sure that I'd want to see over and over. Having said that its one of the best Agatha Christie adaptations I've seen, especially baring in mind it was made in 1945.
