Movie Reviews of And Now Ladies & GentlemenMovie Review: romantic French movie with some twists Summary: 4 Stars
This movie, directed by Claude Lelouch, is a nice romantic movie. Jeremy Irons is very convincing as the hero, a jewelry thief and a yachtsman with a brain tumor. Patricia Kaas plays the lounge singer who sometimes forgets that she has not finished a song, she has brain tumor also. They meet in Fez, she is seeking the healing and he hits a fishing boat and was saved and a doctor introduces them. Valentine was wrongly accused of a jewelry theft of a rich Italian couple, it turns out that the lover of the Italian lady took the jewelry. Valentine had the operation and was seemingly cured of his tumor. He also amended his ways and paid back the jewelry he took from others. In the end Valentine was sailing into the sunset with Jane(Patricia Kaas). I personally like a sad ending, so I feel the ending is too much of a wish fulfillment. The story is very interesting, the acting is superb, there are nice songs by Patricia Kaas just in case you are getting bored, so the movie is very romantic and sweet. There are minor characters that add to the drama, the Italian lady that got robbed was played by Claudia Cardinale, who was a sex symbol in her glory days, in this movie she is a good backup. Jeremy Irons seems to
be good at playing a doomed lover, or somebody with terminal disease, so this movie suits him well. The movie also likes to repeat the idea that "life is a deep sleep, and love is a dream", so in that sense, all the plots and characters are not that important at all, we don't need to take the story that seriously. This movie is entertaining, it has the thrills of jewelry theft, a bit of mystery jewelry theft case, nice singing from Patricia Kaas, do we dare ask for more? Not much sex in this movie, it has plenty of romance. Life is but a dream, why wake up and smell the coffee?
Movie Review: Stella by Starlight Summary: 4 Stars
In the past Claude Lelouch (A Man and A Woman) has been known to go overboard with lush, swoony, gauze-light love scenes with the appropriate music uuuhhing and ahhing in the background. But now Lelouch has gotten a little more realistic about Love and Romance in And Now Ladies and Gentlemen starring Jeremy Irons and Patricia Kaas. Michel Legrand is around once more to write a simple yet beautiful score incorporating classic love songs, some of which Kaas performs in the film. ANLAG is all about le longuer: people who have had it with reality and are looking for something or someone to take them out and away from the drudgeries of their lives; though I would imagine that Irons role as a jewel thief has too much action and not enough drudgery in his. Director Lelouch must walk a very fine line here between romance and parody for this type of film to work and he manages to keep the production on the right side of that line. Irons and especially Kaas come off very well and as is necessary in this type of film, we care for them deeply.
Movie Review: Good fun, great music Summary: 4 Stars
This film may not be as powerful and profound as Lelouch's incredible 1995 "Les Miserables", but it's highly enjoyable and intelligent. It entertains with stories of jewel thefts and amnesia, while at the same gently poking fun at the romanticisation of melancholy. The restrained brooding of the main characters is a sharp contrast to the gorgeous landscapes around them and the cheerfulness of others, and somehow you can't help but chuckle at the antics of these two as they meander their way into a romance. The witty, nonlinear storytelling keeps you guessing to the end, and the wonderful music makes the journey all the more fun. A perfectly lovely way to spend two hours.
Movie Review: Simple, Complex, Delightful Summary: 4 Stars
I'm sorry this film disappeared from the theatres so quickly. I wanted to see it again and take my friends. The story is a new twist on the old theme of the erudite jewel thief. The balanced mixture of French and English languages was stimulating and pleasing for me. I felt the love story was just the right blend of disappointment and satisfaction. The location shooting in France and Morocco entertaining. Jeremy Irons' acting was superb. The story and dialogue over all was multi-layered and mysterious - an experience worth repeating.
Movie Review: Beautiful Child of a Legend Summary: 4 Stars
I saw A Man and a Woman in 1967 and was struck deeply by its cinematic beauty and sensitive depiction of life's joys and sorrows. This new movie forty years later by Claude Lelouche with music again by Michel LeGrande strikes me in the same way. It is the first movie that I would compare with A Man and a Woman in that way. Jeremy Irons and Patricia Kaas are excellent as are the supporting players. If you enjoy this type of movie, you will likely enjoy this one.
