Movie Reviews of Analyze ThisMovie Review: If you like the sopranos, you need to watch this one Summary: 5 Stars
When I first heard of this movie, I was very skeptical about the quality and humor of this film. But when I finally saw it on dvd, I was in stitches. Billy Crystal had been a let down in his previous films, only being good at hosting the Academy awards. And I didn't know De Niro had a funny bone in him. But they pulled it off with a great supporting cast. Crystal plays a psychiatrist, Dr. Sobel, who is about to get married to that Pheobe girl from "Friends". His life seems fairly normal until he accidentally rear ends a mafia car with a guy in the trunk. De Niro, Paul Vitti, checks him out because he's been having some mental distress which is making him a little too soft. And as the head of an organized crime syndicate, that aint no good. Dr. Sobel is really reluctant to take Vitti on as a patient, but he finds out it's hard to say "no" to the man. Their sessions together have so many classic lines like "you turn me into a fag, I kill you." As the plot thickens with Chazz Palminteri trying to snub out Vitti, audiences are treated to probably the best telephone conversation in the whole mafia film genre. While Palminteri's character uses as many four letter expletives as he can, Vitti is talking about the need for "closure". Dr. Sobel unknowingly gets deeper into the "family" then he would like and ends up as a consigliere at a big mafia meeting. The part where he tries to fast talk the heads of mafia families with confusing psycho babble in his best mafioso impersonation is one of the most funniest scenes. And De Niro's fat sidekick, Jelly, is wonderful in his scenes with Crystal. I could go on, but you should see it for yourself. Plus, on the dvd edition, you get some hilarious outtakes. My fiance and I always quote from this movie and most people don't get it and feel left out. Don't be left out. Buy this movie, rent it, do what ever its takes to watch "Analyze This."
Movie Review: Lisa Kudrow was brilliant in this film Summary: 5 Stars
This message goes out directly to the person from Tampa, FL who said that Lisa Kudrow "will always be Phoebe" and that every part she ever plays is an "extension of Phoebe" has no idea what she is talking about! Before making such an opinion, perhaps this person should rent "The Opposite of Sex." Lisa Kudrow was brilliant in that, and that jaded, cynical woman wasn't a bit like Phoebe. True, Michelle from "Romy and Michelle" was also a ditzy blonde, but even she was different than Phoebe. The thing that people always miss about Phoebe's character is that she is not stupid in the least. She just has a different way of thinking and is very literal-minded and naive. Michelle, on the other hand, is just plain stupid. Note, Phoebe always understands things. Joey is the dumb one. And to return to her role in this film, it couldn't be any farther from Phoebe: She is a professional career woman in this film. She also is not quirky or "different" like Phoebe. In fact, her part is way too small in this film, but the parts that she is in, she shines. The only similarity to Phoebe is her voice Lisa Kudrow is a brilliant actress who can make even one-syllable words seem funny and poignant. Just listen to her say "OH!" and you'll know what I mean. Her comic timing is impeccable and her reactions are amazing. Probably the funniest part in the movie is when DeNiro, the gangster Paul Vidi, is offering her a wedding present. She says she cannot accept. he says, "sure you can" and immediately she says "Thank you". The vocal intonation and the way she says "Thank you" is the funniest gem in this entire film. Crystal and DeNiro's performances would give this film four stars, but it is Lisa Kudrow's highly underrated, smaller performance that gives this movie five.
Movie Review: Great movie, so-so extras. Summary: 5 Stars
Let me start by saying that I give the movie five stars. It was a truly funny and enjoyable movie. However the extras on the DVD leave much to be desired. One would think that a commentary track by both De Niro and Crystal would be great, and it probably would be, except for the fact that they did not do it together. What made the movie so good was the chemistry between the two leads, but seperate they just don't capture the same magic. What makes this a true shame is that this is De Niro's first commentary track. He is my all time favorite actor and I would hate to see him turned off of doing commentaries by this one bad experience. For Crystal's part of the commentary he simply states over and over again how great De Niro is. I understood that the first time he said it. Harlod Ramis is a little better on his commentary track, but it lacks the needed punch to be listened to more than once. The gag reel is funny for the first one or two gags and then starts to get old. It is the same thing over and over again (De Niro laughing). Like I said in the begining it was a great movie, but the DVD extras leave much to be desired.
Movie Review: A brilliant refreshing comedy! Summary: 5 Stars
This has to be one of the funniest movies that has ever been made. The premise itself is funny. A mob boss getting in touch with his feelings. The therapy sessions bring out very funny scenarios as ideas and concepts are intrepreted from different perspectives. What is normal in phsyco speak is completely repulsive to a mobster. Likewise, what is normal for a mobster is completely irrational to a psychiatrist. When Crystal suggests Deniro may have sexual feelings about his Mother that are described as normal, Deniro is afraid to call his mother after that. Then of course, the patient confidentially issue comes up. As a patient, Deniro shares secrets with his doctor. The consequences for the Doctor violating that confidentially has a whole new meaning when the patient is a wiseguy! This is not a movie that relies on one liners or gags for the laughs. It is the situations that are funny. A movie that will stand the test of time and keep you laughing long after it's over.
Movie Review: Masterpiece! Summary: 5 Stars
