Movie Reviews of American Graffiti (Collector's Edition)

Movie Review: Lucas's ode to a simpler time
Summary: 5 Stars

George Lucas gets unharsly criticized for the Star Wars prequels. Anytime someone argues Lucas's talent, I can show them this. It is quite a wonderful piece of work. Lucas is able to incredibly recreate the feeling of being a 1950's kid with American Graffiti. A wonderful peice reminiscent of another critical film that receives entirely too much backlash, Forrest Gump (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition), both of which recreate the sense of time's past by taking a lighthearted approach to the subject.

Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Cindy Williams, and Suzanne Somers star in Lucas's ode to the 50's. Just as in Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition with Bonus Disc), Lucas transports us to a time and place entirely different but all too familiar. This is about coming of age in that time but could be attached to any time. It is quite wonderful.

It's also one of the first stories to use, what is now being called hyperlink-cinema, following many main characters throughout one last day of high school.

The DVD really only features a Making Of featurette, but the movie is definitely one to see. It's great.

Highly recommended.

Movie Review: Epitomy of the cinematic art form
Summary: 5 Stars

George Lucas, despite his recent Phantom Menace woes, is truly an artist of amazing sensitivity and accomplishment, as can be seen in this nostalgic look back at the summer of 62. Unlike most films of this genre, "Graffiti" is much more than a sentimental look back at the happy days past. It is a serious look at different people coming of age and making choices in a closing era. John Milner (played by Paul LeMat) quips that he hates the surfing music as he turns off the Beach Boys on the radio, just one of the many fine touches Lucas manages to fit in the movie. Every scenes seems to celebrate youth while at the same time lamenting its inexperience and lack of wisdom...slowly unraveling the philosophical threads that are woven.

The acting is brilliant and personally I have not seen a movie more believable. The documentary style filming that Lucas uses with great skill contributes to this effect.

The extra features on the DVD are also top rate. The interviews with Lucas and the cast members about the making of "Graffiti" is a movie in itself... You must know about all the struggles that preceded the release of the film to fully appreciate everything that Lucas manages to do with limited resources. The recorded screentests of the cast members is a great bonus. It is so easy to see why each actor/actress was perfect for his/her role.

Movie Review: AMERICAN GRAFFITI-a way of life for me,and loads of my mates
Summary: 5 Stars

What can I say, the film A/G is as American as Twinkies, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and of course apple pie. Does that mean I am an American? No sir it does not. But in 1973 i was 11 years old, and when John Milners coupe came blapping down that tarmac, I knew, that was the life for me,and ya know what, some 25 years later, i still watch the film and now build and drive the rods. So many things about growing up in that film has happened to me, I wish In England, we had the wolfman,he still is an icon of mine. But that era is not lost completely, I live that lifestyle to the full, rock n roll has got my soul brother and i eat, drink and sleep nostalgia, even the television, fridge and crockery is 50,s. Just can't find a toilet paper dispenser from that era. ha!ha! But if it wasnt for George Lucas, i may not have had such a full-on hot rodding life,it is somthing that you just cannot grow out of now,and now i am married and maybe one day wil have rug rats, they too can watch American graffiti and get a kick out of it like i did and still do.

I have never heard a bad reveiw about that film and it will be a favourite for ever. Thank you george, you are up there with the greats.

Hot rodding regards from the bottom of the world. STEVE CARPENTER 179. Nelson road. south melbourne Victoria 3205 Australia

Movie Review: An American Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

The year was 1962. The British Invasion, Rock and Roll and the horrors of Vietnam were just over the horizon. John Kennedy was still president. 1962 was the lull before the storm. American Graffiti brilliantly portrays that brief moment of innocence in American history.
This film kicked off George Lucas's directing career. Every viewing of the film is a revelation. I have seen it many times and have always thought of it as having been filmed in Modesto, Lucas's hometown, but as The Making of American Graffiti, the superb documentary included with this DVD reveals, it was actually filmed in Petaluma. Many acting careers began with this movie, including those of Richard Dreyfuss, Ronny Howard and Harrison Ford. American Graffiti set a precedent for wall to wall music in films, which was copied by many that followed. All the music was selected by Lucas. Be sure to get the soundtrack album, which is on two CDs.
This American classic is worth another viewing, but don't miss The Making of American Graffiti, which is the model for how bonus features should be made. It features interviews of the filmmakers and actors in the film and reveals Lucas's unorthodox casting and directing style. Many takes were filmed and Lucas often kept those where mistakes occurred.
