Movie Reviews of American Drug War: The Last White HopeMovie Review: It makes a lot of sense Summary: 5 Stars
If you have ever felt frustrated, confused, cynical, and/or suspicious about the apparent failure of the so-called "War on Drugs" in America, then this documentary could be very helpful in pointing out, and then tying together bits and pieces of information that could make the whole issue come into much sharper focus for you.
As someone who works daily and intimately with people who have become addicted to controlled and uncontrolled (like alcohol) substances, this documentary pretty much validated a nagging thought that I had increasingly yet reluctantly considered, which is that in a way, the drug "users" are actually victims, and the real criminals are those persons of elite status whose wealth and political connections allow them to profit from, and wield immense power over all of us, users and non-users, as they wage their deceitful and duplicitous "War on Drugs".
The director of this public service, Kevin Booth, in my opinion has done a highly commendable job of selecting, organizing, and presenting a great deal of information, which he offers to the attentive viewer as logical building blocks that enable you to "connect the dots". All the evidence, the proof of the corruption and deception that operates behind the jingoistic rhetoric of the "War on Drugs", is right here in this documentary.
The covert attacks on citizens' Constitutional rights, the privatization of the prison industry and the staggering profits and societal control that it affords, the life-wasting incarceration of non-violent drug users; the absolutely willful and deliberate campaign of mis-information that buries the truth about the beneficial medical applications of naturally-occurring agricultural products such as marijuana; the connection between the never-ending wars our government wages and drugs-for-arms sales, the perpetuation of racist stereotypes as regards drug use...All that and much more is presented in this documentary.
What makes the presentation of all this information so clear-eyed and relevant is the director's personal revelation of his experience of addiction to prescription drugs, and the loss of his brother's life to controlled substances like cocaine, methamphetamines, and finally the absolutely hair-raising, medieval techniques of "drug rehabilitation" that he was cruelly subjected to. The interpolation of the sad details of their fateful experiences helps to illuminate the viewer as to how our government's mismanagement of the problem of drugs in our society actually exacerbates the problem and causes unnecessary suffering through mis-information, misappropriation of resources, and playing shell games with the concepts of morality and patriotism.
For those who find it difficult to accept the idea that our government could willfully attempt to delude us or mislead us, then I would suggest that you augment your viewing of this documentary, "American Drug War: The Last White Hope" with some solid journalistic reporting on the subject, such as Professor Alfred W. McCoy's "The Politics of Heroin: CIA Complicity in the Global Drug Trade".
