Movie Reviews of American DreamerMovie Review: The trick is, never let them enter contests. Summary: 5 Stars
Cathy Palmer's husband Kevin Palmer (James Staley) is the same type as the husband in "Shirley Valentine" (1989) and "Enchanted April" (1992). You know the kind. Not so much atrophied as just preoccupied with their business and own life that wives like Cathy (JoBeth Williams) become an after thought. However, as her husband says, "The important thing kid is that you are doing something that you like to do." He says this as he nonchalantly brushes her off on his way out the door.
Naturally, Cathy's head is full of Rebecca Ryan novels and after winning a Rebecca Ryan writing contest she adds language skills needed for her trip to Europe.
This is where the story begins and I stop. I would like to describe more however, let us say that Cathy mysteriously disappears in Europe and Rebecca Ryan suddenly appears with Dimitri to fulfill her mission to save The Count.
Move over 007 here come Rebecca Ryan and she always gets her person.
Seems Like Old Times
Movie Review: My favorite movie to watch again and again! Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is clever, cute, funny (at times, hysterical) and adds just the right amount of "romantic" to its "romantic comedy" genre to make me go "ahh!" every time I watch it. Tom Conti plays the perfect teddy bear sidekick, and handles his role beautifully as the befuddled straight man to Williams' straight-out-of-a-whodunnit-novel character as Rebecca Ryan. He's disarmingly charming and is the perfect down-to-earth foil to Williams' dangerous escapades. There is an hysterical scene in the police station that you have to see, and his mother, who Williams takes for "Aunt Edna" in the mystery series, handles her few lines with an unmatched elegance, and beautiful timing. There is enough material here for a whole series of movies, but they packed it into this one delightful romp you'll want to watch again and again.
Movie Review: Romantic comedy at its best Summary: 5 Stars
It's a shame that this movie is so rarely known. It's actually a gem, perfectly paced and filmed.
The hero/heroine with amnesia who develops a new, more dynamic identity, may seem a bit tired these days, but when this movie released it was fresh and strong. Female secret agents were under-utilized and it's nice to see JoBeth Williams - who has natural good looks as opposed to manufactured beauty - be cocky and daring while never loosing her wit. Tom Conti makes an excellent love interest. He's charming and sophisticated yet utterly zany at times.
The twists and turns keep the viewer fascinated and the movie has my most favorite false ending of any I have watched on the big screen.
American Dreamer remains among my top 10 favorite films of all time.

Movie Review: This is one of the best feel good films ever. Summary: 5 Stars
Saw it in the 80's and went back to the theater two more times to see it again. I'm sure I was the first one to buy it on VHS and get totally addicted to it. It's so underrated, but it's one of the best movies I have ever seen. Even guys like it. LOL I can't even tell you how many times I have watched it, but it's way more than any other movie. I wore my VHS copy out, kept upgrading TVs over the years and always searched for it on DVD. I figured it was a lost cause and eventually it just slipped my mind. But tonight, out of the blue, I got a brain fart and did an Amazon search and there it was on DVD. YEE HAW!!! I can hardly wait to receive it. I am going to buy copies as xmas presents for my family. Now if they would only release it in Blu-ray.
