Movie Reviews of All the King's Men

Movie Review: RELEVANT AND RIVETTING PERFORMANCE!
Summary: 5 Stars

All The King's Men is the story of the rise of politician Willie Stark from a rural county seat to the governor's mansion. Along the way, he loses his innocence, and becomes just as corrupt as the politicians he once fought against. Also included is the romance between one of his "right hand women" and the up-and-coming journalist who brings Stark to prominence.
Rossen originally offered the starring role to John Wayne, who found the proposed film script unpatriotic and indignantly refused the part. Crawford, who eventually took the role, won the 1949 Academy Award for Best Actor, beating out Wayne, who had been nominated for his role in Sands of Iwo Jima.
The film won Oscars in the following categories:

Best Picture - Robert Rossen Productions (Robert Rossen, producer)
Best Actor - Broderick Crawford as Willie Stark
Best Supporting Actress - Mercedes McCambridge as Sadie Burke
It was also nominated for

Best Supporting Actor - John Ireland as Jack Burden
Best Director - Robert Rossen
Best Film Editing - Al Clark and Robert Parrish
Best Writing, Screenplay - Robert Rossen
In 2001 the United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Movie Review: Broderick Crawford is mesmerizing (4.6/5)
Summary: 5 Stars

i was mesmerized by this film from the beginning.i thought the story was great,i as was the writing.the dialogue was also well written.especially the first fiery speech given by Broderick Crawford's character,Willie Stark.i can find no fault with the acting, especially Crawford.i thought he was brilliant.i couldn't take my eyes off him.talk about a powerhouse performance.the movie really packs a powerful wallop to the stomach.the story of political corruption and greed is just as topical(if not more so)today and could easily be based on one of many of our present day politicians.would the film be as good without the brilliant performance of Broderick Crawford.we'll never know.and that's just fine.for me,All the King's Men (1949) is a 4.6/5

Movie Review: Willie Stark is more gutsy than Bush or Clinton
Summary: 5 Stars

Although this film is about corruption and politics, Willie Stark has
more 'guts' than anybody running today in the year, 2008.
And Sadie Burke(Mercedes McCambridge) could blow Hillary Clinton back
to Arkansas along with her wimpbag husband, Bill.
All said and done, this film is fantastic, better than the novel--too trashy, salty language(who needs it!)
Great cast, screenplay and director. John Ireland SHOULD have gotten
the OSCAR for best supporting actor--he could wipe the floor with Sadie and 'Ann'(Joanne Dru)both together. And a young John Derek was very good as the football player brother, Tom.
An excellent film. Didn't know about it until I saw it on TCM!

Movie Review: All The Kings Men - 1949 VERSION
Summary: 5 Stars

Our son worked on the 2006 version of All The Kings Men with Sean Penn, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Patricia Clarkson and Anthony Quinn. I ordered the 1949 version as a Christmas Gift. It was interesting to see the differences between two movies made 57 years apart. I was glad I was still able to get a copy of a 1949 movie through Amazon.com. The 1949 version had some good points for the time it was made. It is my understanding that Steve Zallion, Director and Screen Play writer of the 2006 movie read the novel by Robert Penn Warren but did not see the 1949 version before writing the screen play or directing the film. We liked the 2006 version better and didn't think it received enough credit.

Movie Review: Powerful movie
Summary: 5 Stars

This was one one of the best movies I have ever seen. The acting is powerful and dramatic - and thoroughly believable. I had recently read the book and was worried the movie would not do justice to the book. I needn't have worried. The movie moved along at a fast pace and was very emotion packed. I recommend it to everyone!
