Movie Reviews of All I Want

Movie Review: An Excellent DVD Release
Summary: 5 Stars

This rather awesome DVD is both a treat for fans of Rufus Wainwright, as well as people who may be getting into his music. As a fan, it only deepened my appreciation for his music and opened my eyes wider to his brilliance as a songwriter, singer, and performer and there's enough here to make someone only slightly familiar with the man want to dig further into his discography. With over three hours of various forms of material for you to enjoy, there's plenty here to soak up in increments or all at once. The material only covers his material through his stunning Want One and Want Two albums, but having only released two albums since; it's still a stunning overview of his work. There are reviews aplenty here telling you what is contained on the DVD and various reviewers thoughts on that material, so I'll keep my descriptions and critiques as brief as possible.

1. All I Want: A Portrait of Rufus Wainwright
This hour-long documentary covers Rufus' life from childhood through the recording of his four albums. Despite its rather short length, it covers this material pretty thoroughly. There are interviews with Rufus, his sister Martha, and his late mother Kate McGarrigle, as well as interviews with Elton John, Sting, Tom Chaplin (singer of Keane), and the band Scissor Sisters. While I enjoyed this documentary very much, I have but one trivial complaint; they didn't seem to find enough people to interview and as such we have the people they do interview reiterating their thoughts on Rufus' brilliance several times.

2. The next section that features Rufus recording a new song called "The Maker Makes" and a short little video titled "Rufus Wainwright: 1998," that features some interviews and performance footage.

3. The Studio Frisson Sessions are intimate performances with just Rufus and his piano or guitar performing Gay Messiah, Crumb by Crumb, Rebel Prince, The Art Teacher, This Love Affair, and Poses. They are lovely performances that show Rufus can is a top tier musician and singer in a studio or live setting.

4. The Cambridge Corn Exchange Live features Rufus and his band performing four songs from Want One: Movies of Myself, Go or Go Ahead, I Don't Know What It Is, and Beautiful Child. Once again, these performances are stunning.

5. Central Park Summerstage features Rufus performing Beauty Mark, Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk, and Dinner at Eight. This performance is probably the weakest of the performances, but they are still incredibly pleasing; especially his exceptional performance of Dinner at Eight.

6. The music video section has his music videos for The One You Love, California, Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk, and April Fools. You can find them all on youtube, but they're a fun little addition.

7. Finally, there is bonus interviews which feature Rufus, Martha, Kate McGarrigle, Rufus' Want sessions producer Marius de Vries, and the other musicians featured in the All I Want documentary discussing ten of Rufus' songs; the meaning behind them, the writing process, their various reactions to it, the recording process, etc. The songs discussed are I Don't Know What It Is, Gay Messiah, Poses, The Art Teacher, Go or Go Ahead, The One you Love, Beautiful Child, Rebel Prince, Movies of Myself, and Dinner at Eight. These bonus interviews are fascinating insights into the songs and only provided me with a deeper appreciation for them.

Overall, this DVD is something I highly recommend you check out if you're interested in doing so. While any fan of Rufus may be craving more once it's all over, there's more here to satisfy than hardly any musician will provide you with on a DVD release.
