Movie Reviews of AliveMovie Review: "Sad, Yet Very Uplifting" Summary: 5 Stars
"Alive" tells the true story of a plane that was chartered by a Uruguagan rugby team that crashed in the Andes mountains in South America in 1972. The movie follows the survivors over a two month period where they struggled to survive without water, food, and heat and their attempts to make it out of a living hell. Many of these survivors eventually realized the only way they were going to survive was too engage in cannibalism by eating the bodies of the dead people who didn't make it.
The crash of the plane happens during the first moments of the movie and it is extremely well-done and produced and it gives the viewer an insight to those final moments as to what happened before the fatal crash. Graphically depicted, after watching the plane crash it makes me timid to ever fly again.
"Alive" was based on Piers Paul Reed's book "Alive" The Story of The Andes Survivors" in which he conducted thorough interviews with the remaining survivors of this horrific incident.
This was Ethan Hawke's first majot film role and most, if not all, of the cast is first-rate. Their portrayals are both convincing and heartbreaking and upon watching the film one realizes how these people survived was by having hope and faith.
Bonuses on the DVD include introductions by the film's director Frank Marshall and two informative and detailed documentaries called "Alive: 20 Years Later" and "Return To The Andes" where some of the real-life survivors are interviewed.
James Newton Howard, a well-known and Oscar nominated composer, scored "Alive" beautifully and his music adds to the dramatic aspect of the movie. Aaron Neville performs the theme to the end credits called "Ava Maria" which is simply hair-raising.
"Alive" was met with mixed critical reviews and was a modest hit at the boxoffice making over $36,000,000 on a $32,000,000 budget. It was also filmed entirely in British Columbia, Canada that looked very much like the Andes.
Movie Review: Intense and uplifting Summary: 5 Stars
Frank Marshall's celluloid recreation of Andes tragedy and the stupendous will of the survivors is intensely gripping and moving. As one of the reviewers remarked that if one wants to see a demonstration of human will and spirit, just watch this movie. I watched this movie on HBO and during the entire length was absolutely seized by it. I kind of felt myself going through the horrendous ordeal and was crying uncontrollably in second half. I was so stricken and moved by the tremendous ordeal(there's no stronger word than this)my heart pleaded for their rescue every second of the movie. Kudos to Frank Marshall for managing to create such a masterpiece....few movies manage to seize viewers....this belongs to that elite category. The cast is uniformly excellent in performances and special praise for the Latino looking guy and Eathen Hawke. Cinematography is absolutely stunning right from the plane crash, avalanches, majestic sunrises to seatsledge rides.Watching the movie was so emotionally stirring and I wonder how the real survivors managed to stay alive under horrific odds. Truly a tale of indestructible human spirit, strength of will to survive, courage to face the meanest of hardships. The basic plot is explained by other reviewers so I won't go into it. Please, please watch it and marvel at the strength of human Spirit. Hope Frank Marshall makes more such movies.
Movie Review: UNA HISTORIA PARA AMAR EL DESEO DE VIVIR!! Summary: 5 Stars
Movie Review: INSPIRATIONAL FILM ABOUT INCREDIBLE SPIRIT Summary: 5 Stars
ALIVE is a gripping tour de force that focuses on the remarkable durability of the human spirit. Avoiding sentimentality and maudlinism, and focusing on the terrible dilemma the survivors face catapults the movie into a masterpiece of hope, defeat, unimaginable odds and faith. The cannibalism is treated with remarkable dignity, and there are several emotional scenes that leave you drained.
The cast is very good with Josh Hamilton, John Haymes Newton and of course Ethan Hawke standing out. The entire cast however deserves credit for their team performance. John Malkovich's prologue and epilogue are handled very well too. Malkovich has a smooth and hypnotizing voice and behind the smoke from the interviewer's cigarette, he gives us bookend thoughts.
A truly remarkable story but even more remarkable is the courage it took to survive.
Movie Review: Amazing, Amazing, Amazing!! Summary: 5 Stars
I love movies. Its a fact. I have hundreds of movies and I love to watch whatever I can. And Alive is probably one of my favorite movies EVER! I love everything about it. I think that they portrayed the story in such an amazing way. My mom had been telling me about this movie for years and I was always like "um, ew, I don't want to watch people eating each other," but finally I rented it and sat down, prepared to be disgusted. But I wasn't. I came out in awe. What those men went through was horrific and they should be such an inspiration to everyone. Almost right away I purchased this movie and the book by Piers P. Read. I highly suggest both to anyone and everyone.
