Movie Reviews of Alice, Sweet AliceMovie Review: Cuts deep to the heart... Summary: 4 Stars
This 1976 classic pre-slasher flick holds a special place in my heart. There are certain weak spots in the special effects or acting in spots, but over all this is a terrific horror movie. A pre-teen Brooke Shields is marvelous in her cinematic debut role as the ill-fated Karen who is killed a half-hour or so into the movie at her first Communion. Best actress honors (in this flick, anyway) should be awarded to the 13-year-old Paula Sheppard, who is extraordinary in the title role: Alice, the troubled girl who is lashing out at the family and the world who seem to think she should be treated like a second-class citizen for reasons that are revealed in the movie. The pacing is usually well set throughout the film, building suspense in appropriate scenes, casting shadows of suspicion at Alice, making you wonder if she is the killer...and if not her, then who is it??? I've read a few reviews of this movie claiming that there is too much screaming and hysteria by characters, just because they or someone they know got stabbed 6 or 7 times by a long knife. And although I'll admit that the acting and script has occasional weak moments, I have to say that if someone stabbed ME 6 or 7 times with a long, sharp knife, I might be proned to be a bit peeved and scream a little. But that's just me. The occasional poke at Catholic doctrine and dogma are made in this film, but over all, this is a film about people...and human frailty...and insanity! There are some murders, some violence, some blood...but for the most part, none of it is too graphic or overdone. The days of the real slasher movies had not yet begun when this was made. As I said, there are a few weak moments in the script, acting and special effects. But these are minimal. This is a great movie primarily. Suspenseful, with action, not too excessive on the violence, well paced...and even when you know who the killer is, you're still not prepared for the 'killer ending'! So, let me end by saying I highly recommend this movie, (but that's just me) and close by reminding you once again that you are not prepared for the 'killer ending'!
KILLER ENDING!!
Movie Review: 70's Creeper that won't be forgotten! Summary: 4 Stars
Alice, Sweet Alice is one of those rare films that should be remembered for several reasons. Made in 1976, this definitely has the look and feel of a 70's film. Previously released by Anchor Bay, this is now available by Hen's Tooth and the DVD quality is great along with the original cover art. This really shouldn't be classified as a slasher film that became so popular in the 1980's after the success of Halloween and Friday the 13th. There are actually very few deaths in this film. But this does not detract from the picture in any way. There are still some very disturbing, frightening scenes with some religious tones added in that wrap up the plot. This is a definitely a horror film but also somewhat of a psychological drama/thriller. The acting can be a bit over the top at times but otherwise, it is pretty solid for what it is. I recently watched this for the first time, and it is anything but predictable even for the most jaded horror fan. It will shock and surprise you. The musical score is creepy and heightens the overall mood of the film. I give this 4 stars! It's really a great flick to watch on more than one occasion. Other 70's treasures to savor are Black Christmas, The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane and When a Stranger Calls.
Movie Review: a true classic of suspense Summary: 4 Stars
The first time I saw *Alice, Sweet Alice* was when I was flipping through the TV channels, looking for something good to watch. There's something about this movie because, since the first time I saw it, I've watched it repeatedly. I consider this film a classic because it is still suspenseful after all these years.
After her sister, Karen, is murdered, suspicion falls on Alice, who is just simply a bratty, spoiled child! After all, once you see the yellow raincoat and the mask, you'll assume it's has to be Alice who is the culprit. However, about halfway, you start to have doubts and that is what makes the film worthwhile to watch. And like *Sixth Sense*, you have to watch it again to see if you missed the clues.
*Alice, Sweet Alice* is symbols galore, heavily involving the Catholic church. You just have to watch it again to appreciate all the hidden messages. Thus, this film is a great conversational piece.
After 30 years, this film can still make you bite your nails. Now, I call that a classic!
Movie Review: Beware of Empty New Boxes!! Summary: 4 Stars
I'm a big fan of this movie and have variously owned it on VHS and the first edition DVD. I have to warn you though, that there has been a major packaging error with this Hen's Tooth release, and if you order a NEW copy, chances are pretty good that you'll find yourself with an empty DVD case. This has happened to me TWICE, with two separate orders from opposite sides of the United States. If you DO decide to purchase this product, I would (and am going to) order it USED, because at least in that regard you know the disc is there. To unwrap a new DVD and find nothing inside two times in a row is a real downer. Don't let it happen to you.
Movie Review: very very good Summary: 4 Stars
i just got this dvd, the Henstooth Video version that came in may 2007 (not the anchor bay version that is out of print) i was very surprised by
this movie.Great cast, great music, a nice 70`s feel (it reminded me a bit
of The Exorcist) The only thing is that their are no xtra features and the
transfer wasent great (it looks grayish)If you have never seen this movie (and if you are a horror movie fan) go get it now.Cant say if the anchor bay version is better (im sure it is cause they are the best)
