Movie Reviews of Alice's Restaurant

Movie Review: A Product of the Times
Summary: 4 Stars

I come from the '60's era and found Alice's Restaurant to be kind of camp, and somewhat reminiscent. Arlo suggested in an earlier review that we should boycott it. However he indicated to me in Sept. 2003 that it would be okay now to buy it. He was right that I enjoyed his commentary 30 years later. He separates the fiction from reality, such as those who only re-enacted the reality in the movie felt they were present at the original event.

I was glad to have bought it. While it isn't something that is has intrinsically deep meanings, it mixes a humorous story with a couple of serious subplots. It also gave me a chance to compare the young Arlo with my son, who has more than a passing resemblance to Arlo and is a fine musician to boot. PPS.

While one might not realize it from watching this movie, Arlo is also a pretty accomplished guitarist, besides the storyteller-folksinger-hippie type you see in this movie. If you get a chance to see him on tour, it's well worth it. Arlo probably won't sing much of "Alice's Restaurant" though, as it takes up too much time of a show and he has much more repertoire than "Alice". If you want that, buy this DVD.

Movie Review: LIKE, FAR OUT MANNNNN!
Summary: 4 Stars

Longing for those days back in the late 60's/early 70's? The days of peace, love and happiness? Back when your life revolved around the new Who release, FM Album Rock, scoring for tonight's party?

This is the DVD that will take you there.

They call it a movie, but it's really a documentary on the hippy days of yore! Get yourself in the right frame of mind and you'll swear you're there, mannnnn.

There is one surprize! Arlo Guthrie! I don't remember him that way but, in the movie, he's this beautiful young guy who is very, very polite to everyone. He's also the star of the show and you can tell he's being "presented" during this movie. That's some great record promotion, which, of course, the 60's/70's are famous for. Back there in the golden age of, the music industry.

This is also one of those movies that is great for playing in the background of a party, if your guests are old hippies!

Party Onnnn!

Movie Review: ALICE'S RESTAURANT!
Summary: 4 Stars

Okay, I fully admit that I like the SONG "Alice's Restaurant" a lot better than the MOVIE, but his 1969 film directed by Arthur Penn is pretty good! Inspired by the "true" story of Arlo Guthrie being arrested for LITTERING in a small New England town, this film covers everything in the song and a whole lot more in fleshing out the tawdry little tale! My favorite part is when Arlo goes down for the draft! PAT QUINN plays the immortal Alice and ARLO GUTHRIE plays the immortal Arlo, with James Broderick along for the ride! Of course watching this film today gives you more of a sense of NOSTALGIA for the end of the Sixties than a sense of moral OUTRAGE at the man for coming down on Arlo and Company! This is the original R-Rated version of the film and has the added value of ARLO on the audio commentary! It just makes you want to go out and take some 8 x 10 glossy pictures!

Movie Review: i wanna KILL! KILL!! KILL!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

arthur penn directed this very dark comedy which only tangentially touches on arlo guthries classic song. however, arlo is a born natural, and the rest of the cast wonderfully captures some moments of the late 60s (tho, as you listen to arlos frequently hilarious and always astute commentary track, much of the madness was a producers fantasy on how hippies actually behaved). the 20 or so minutes devoted to the events of the song (officer obie, the draft board, &c) are almost a set piece that can be removed from the rest of the film, but this is a movie that deserves to be watched every thanksgiving weekend.

Movie Review: A sixties Classic, FINALLY on DVD!
Summary: 4 Stars

Arthur Penn did a great job of capturing the spirit of the late 60's in this film version of Arlo's classic Story/Song.
One of the neatest things about this film is that it was filmed at the actual locations where the story took place! Officer Obie actually plays himself! It's also neat to see James Broderick, father of Matthew Broderick in this movie. He was a great actor!

I love the story's Anti-War statement, as well as showing what hard drugs can do to you.
The music is awesome, too of course!

I am so glad to see this film on DVD!

Thanks!
