This is Alice Cooper at his finest. That said, Alice Cooper's work is sometimes hit an miss with me. I always felt that Alice had some really good tunes on each album, but too many tracks on each album (except for the awesome Welcome to My Nightmare) often suffered from music that didn't really support Alice's voice--the music often sounded hollow. But, then along came the mighty Brutal Planet, which gave me what I had always wanted, music that supported Alice's voice and shoved it straight down my throat. I first became aware of Brutal Planet when I unknowingly stumbled on the video for Gimme, Gimme, Gimme. That video and that song promised what Brutal Planet delivered, which is a phenomenal album that sent Alice roaring into the new millennium. There's not a bad track on Brutal Planet. And this DVD captures the heart of that CD and Alice's massive stage show. From the opening bit with "The Controller" to Alice ascending the stage, I knew this was going to kick butt. The band that Alice has supporting him here is the best he's ever had. They bring the heart of BP to the stage and renew the energy of classic Alice tunes like Eighteen. What a killer rendition of Go to Hell you get here, and Feed My Frankenstein blisters the ears. I have only one complaint about this DVD/CD combination, and that is the fact that they don't play a full version of I Love the Dead. Other than that, this stuff rocks! Alice followed up Brutal Planet with an equally impressive Dragontown, which delivered the same full throttle sound. The next CD, Eyes of Alice Cooper, returned to that hollow sound that doesn't really draw me in, but for this performance alone, Alice is a metal god. I hear his next CD might be a hybrid of the BP/Dragontown and Eyes of Alice sounds. That could be cool, but until then, if you don't have Brutally Live, you're really missing out!
