Movie Review: ALFIE - - - Michael Caine Summary: 5 Stars
Alfie . . .
Truly a 60's classic. I first saw it as a young teenager and have seen it many times over. A real keeper.
The movie was done in a cool way where Alfie speaks his thoughts out loud to us into the camera. . .
There's only one Alfie !
Movie Review: What's it all about Mikie Summary: 4 Stars
What's it all about? This is the movie that brought Michael Caine to world wide attention.
Alfie (Caine) is a cockney limousine driver that is more interested in chasing the birds (women sort not feathered sort) than in work. He has his own flock. His regular birds and then he has a backup bird. The only problem is that he has knocked up his backup bird and she wants to keep it. At first Alfie doesn't want anything to do with little Malcolm but he quickly grows attached to the kid. But since he doesn't want marry her so she goes to her backup guy!
Even after Alfie is diagnosed with a respiratory ailment, he chats up the sisters (nurses). Upon his return, he takes up street photography where he meets a sassy American, Ruby (Shelly Winters - between Oscar wins). Alfie goes back to visit his hospital roommate and winds up chatting up his wife and knocks her up (potent guy).
Alfie goes back to limousine driving and picks up a hitchhiker on the road. She moves in with Alfie and becomes his housekeeper and backup girl. He finally throws her out but realizes too late what he is losing.
Alfie takes up with Ruby but finds out that she is the female version of him. And when he catches her with another guy, she tells him that "he's younger than you are".
The film ends with a great performance of Alfie by Cher.
The film is based on a play by Bill Naughton (who adapted it). The play has Alfie as narrator and commentator. Naughton kept this for the movie. While this usually works on stage as the audience is part of the immediacy, it usually does not work on film. But in this case, Alfie's narration or observances of life add to plot. Director Lewis Gilbert handles the film and its, at that time, controversial subject matter with great ease.

Movie Review: Grandest Batchlor of Them All Summary: 4 Stars
Watching this DVD makes me understand why some of us love the single life.
Michael Caine is just perfect in the role of Smoothie, Alfie. Talking to the camera about his private thoughts while entertaining a lady adds much interest to his activities.
Narcissistic, handsome and very charming Alfie is confident even stealing a girl away from a buddy. Concerned, as he picks up one of his girlfriend's hand and tell her he doesn't want her hands getting ruined as she washes his floors on hands and knees, he doesn't want her making him "puffed" from the kidney pies she bakes for him, after his friends tease him about his appearance.
Heartbreaker Shelly Winters is his psychological twin. Playgirl doesn't want love, just a little fling.
The horrible scene of his debilitated friend's wife's pregnancy is why I skipped 5 stars.
It end with Alfie walking and concerned, ego broken by Winter's affair with a very young guy.
Lastly, the song "What's it All About" is great.
Movie Review: what its all about is a classic turn by michael caine Summary: 4 Stars
this is the movie that made michael caine a star, and deservedly so. coming at the tail end of the english angry young man movies (a decade of filmmaking i dont usually care for), this was (next to the sadly unavailable "loneliness of the long distance runner") arguably the best of the batch. funny and frank and touching, and with a refreshing -- even if, imho wrongheaded -- take on the effect of abortion on the father. caine (quite the looker 40 years back in case youve forgotten) is a fully-formed actor even at this early stage of his fine career, and of course theres that song ...
