Movie Reviews of AlfieMovie Review: The original Alfie Summary: 5 Stars
Based on the play by screenwriter Bill Naughton, director Lewis Gilbert's "Alfie" is a black comedy of mores and manners about a naïve womanizer who wonders, as in the title song, "What's it all about?" Caine, in a star-making role, is sensational as the charming but emotionally clotted Alfie, whose hilarious asides to the camera leaven the film's heavier moments. Just as good is a brassy Shelley Winters as Ruby, a seductive vixen who turns Alfie inside out. Even today, Gilbert's unsparing riff on the emptiness of sexual conquest still resonates, and the film also benefits from the palpable electricity of London in the swinging sixties.
Movie Review: What's it all about, Alfie? Summary: 5 Stars
Michael Caine plays the title character, a rogue who spends his life having affairs with various women and making them (and himself) miserable. One woman (Julia Foster) he impregnates, but refuses to marry, and as he goes to other, more selfish women, he bemoans his "ties" to Foster as he sinks into the depths with the others. By the end he's a fairly detestable character, despite his feeling of remorse, Caine acts the part excellently, as does Shelley Winters who plays a rich, man-using lush. There is also a great jazz score written and played by Sonny Rollins. Definitely worth a watch (and listen).
Movie Review: The best of Michael Caine Summary: 5 Stars
This is the movie that caused Michael Caine to be shunned by filmmakers for quite a long time after it's release. He is SO good as Alfie, the penultimate seducer - and deserter - of women, that he became associated with the character to the extent that many people - women especially - despised him for years. Enough time has passed now to be able to just enjoy a particularly fine movie. Even though the role of women has progressed beyond Alfie's "birds", and we have attained a status that precludes being referred to as "it", this is still a timeless and brilliant movie.
Movie Review: What's it all about~~Alfieeeeeee Summary: 5 Stars
A classic from the sixties. My mum used to watch this when I was a toddler. Now, I watch it myself and it's truly one of the best British films ever made. Michael Caine walks you through this film with his thick Cockney accent telling the story of his life. Even though 'Alfie' is obviously a cad and womanizer, you can't help but love him. The film is about a young man and his many 'conquests' in sixties London. Shelley Winters makes an appearance as his older girlfriend. A gem that everyone should own or at least rent once a year.
Movie Review: the ending? Summary: 5 Stars
this is one of my all time top favorites...BUT...does the DVD have the ending with the song by Cher? That is the version I prefer. I rented a VHS a few years ago and it did NOT have this! To me the movie is just not the same without the ending and the song... Alfies says "you have to ask yourself, 'whats it all about?' " and then pets the stray mutt, as the bacharach song plays. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS IS ON THE DVD?
