Movie Reviews of AlfieMovie Review: Charming Misanthrope Summary: 5 Stars
It took me a number of years to finally catch up with "Alfie" and, boy, did I have a misconception about the film. I thought Alfie was a free-spirited dandy who loves and leaves the ladies. Little did I know that he's a self-loathing misogynist. It's a brilliant device to have Alfie address the audience. Alfie may think he's pleading his case but instead he digs a deeper hole for himself. Unlike the angry British young men of a few years prior social conditions don't seem to have effected his mindset. Nope, Alfie was probably always a louse. Credit Michael Caine for making this cretin if not sympathetic at least palatable. I also found the film's decidedly pro-life stance refreshing. The irony is that the case for the sanctity of unborn life is delivered most compellingly by of all people an abortionist played by Denholm Elliott. This film is an interesting counterpart to the 2004 remake. Jude Law's gives a more sympathetic rendering of Alfie even though the character is no less of a cad.
Movie Review: Negative reviewers don't get it! Summary: 5 Stars
Unfortunately, I'm old enough to have seen this film in the theatre. Fortunately, I did! Many more viewings on the tele. I never got tired of this great film.Michael Caine's Alfie was all the terrible things mentioned by other reviewers, but it was presented in a way that was humorous, in spite of the fact that you cringed on some of the antics. The point most people miss is this guy does horrible things, but I really don't think any of it was intentional. He did things out of stupidity and really not knowing any better. Shelly Winters character was the first to bring him down to earth. By the time the film ended, he was left alone. You actually felt a bit sorry for him at the end in spite of his behaviour. I'd like to believe if there was a sequel, you would have seen a transformed man, far more caring than the one in this picture. Just a great movie that I can watch over and over again.
Movie Review: Life is tenuous at best Alfie Summary: 5 Stars
In this engaging film,Michael Caine represents the blocked and emotion fearing english working class man.
His attititude towards women is hauntingly vacant. He uses them to fill the time with a no committment banter to the camera.
He fathers a child, picks up homeless women, and retreats to an older woman for mothering and the nice things she has to offer(Shelley Winters).
Alfie drops his defenses when he experiences the aftermath of his married girlfriends abortion.Caine is excellent at making you believe his limited and lonely perspective.
Cher is the perfect singer with her recording of "Alfie" during the closing credits. The pathos of her voice and the youth in her reading remind us of the "birds" Alfie uses to cover his lonely dreams.
All in all a memorable film, with comedic touches to keep it from being maudlin.
Movie Review: Dark Comedy with Great Performance by Michael Caine Summary: 5 Stars
Hard to believe Michael Caine had to do "Jaws 4: The Revenge," because he kicks ass in this blockbuster still-socially-relevant 60's classic. A great snapshot of period London, right down to the great musical soundtrack and costumes. Most modern audiences should still find it affecting and effective, although the "talking to camera" gimmick has been overused and abused in the 4 decades since this was made.
Shelley Winters gives a very good, surprisingly understated supporting performance...as do all the female players.
Too bad the DVD doesn't feature a Caine commentary track. That would be great!
See if you can guess who sings the famous theme song in this movie version...it ain't Dionne Warwick! You'll love it...
Movie Review: Michael is such a genius Summary: 5 Stars
This is the first movie and soundtrack I ever experienced from Michael Caine himself. He is such a great actor and has a sense of humor and kinda point of view. Think he should deserves this. Even tho u have seen the remake of it yet with Jude Law in it, it'll turn u away. I'd have seen it 3 or 4 times and it didn't quite bore me at all, I believe it's a romantic movie that's about this fella who falls in love with other girls just 'cuz he's has a wife. No movie fan or critic should eva hate on this at all. This should a classic rating (5 stars or an A+ or A-). I think I'ma collect it to go with my movie collection ASAP. Definitely a must if u love Michael Caine.
