Movie Reviews of Alaska

Movie Review: Alaskan Rescue
Summary: 4 Stars

This is just entertainment, but I find it interesting some of the points made by the critics. It is true that typically you wouldn't find a polar bear in the mountains. But did you know, EXPERTS ON THE MATTER, have recently found that polar bears have mated with grizzlies in the wild and furthermore people have been known to transport them to other areas as well. And last time I heard grizzlies don't go where the polar bears are. Well one of them is travelling where they SUPPOSEDLY DON'T GO. So before you get stuffed shirt on how it isn't feasible, don't kid yourself, anything is possible. The movie will appeal to young children the most, some teens, and those adults that enjoy Disney style action movies.

Movie Review: Alaska
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great family movie. The polar bear is priceless. Also if you are into mountains and scenery this movie is for you. Have watched it four times since we received it.

Movie Review: What part of: "This is a Children's Film" don't you understand?
Summary: 3 Stars

Hard to figure the negative comments about this film. It is geared to an elementary school audience who will find it very entertaining. But it is also good family viewing because the scenery is terrific and the polar bear cub is very cute. Since there was never a conspiracy to keep the demographic identity of the target audience a national secret, those complaining about its lack of sophistication were just too lazy to check it out before actually viewing it. The film delivers exactly what it promises so there is no real basis for that kind of criticism.

The editing is first class; especially on the canoe down the rapids sequence where the second unit stuff is perfectly cut into tight shots of the two stars. Thora Birch turns in another excellent performance and Vincent Kartheiser shows that even before "Angel" he modeled his acting on William Shatner (this is not a complement).

There are a number of plot holes but nothing that really matters. One interesting thing is the scene where the bear cub helps in the rescue effort by pulling the rope with his teeth. Seldom can you point to a "single" stupid detail that drastically dumbs down a film but that is the case here. Lose that one moronic shot and the film gains about 20 IQ points and could add a couple years to its target audience.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

Movie Review: A Film for Kids and Old Ladies Like Me
Summary: 3 Stars

I saw the film on Encore (television) and liked it because of the beauty and because of the animals. I purchased it for my great grandson (seven) who is stationed with his parents at Eielson AFB, Alaska. (Hey, I am not an objective reviewer when animals are involved--just pictures of them cavorting in their natural habitat is enough to make a good film for me!) This is a children's film--lost father rescued by determined kids, heavy-handed, mean-faced bad guys out-smarted by children and their father, all the while fighting the elements with the grandeur of nature either helping or hindering them. Like all good children's films, however, it appeals to adults if it is well-done. ALASKA appealed to me--I enjoyed it.

Movie Review: Predictable and unbelievable at the same time
Summary: 3 Stars

This movie tells the story of two young people, Jessie and Sean, who have moved to Alaska with their father after their mother's death. Jessie is making the best of the move, but Sean is very unhappy that he has been uprooted from his home in Chicago. When their father's plane crashes during what was to have been a routine flight, Jessie and Sean decide to rescue him. What follows is totally unbelievable, but there is some exciting action during the rescue and the scenery is spectacular. Mostly designed as a children's movie, the scenery is probably the best part for adults.
