Movie Reviews of Advise and Consent

Movie Review: Fine film but impeach the commentator
Summary: 3 Stars

Otto Preminger's terrific political drama comes to DVD as part of the studio's "Controversial Classics Collection" -- owing to a plot twist involving a homosexual affair.

Allen Drury's 1959 novel about Washington infighting during the confirmation hearings over a tainted Secretary of State candidate was a sensation in its day -- the Pulitzer winner remains the second-longest-charting title on the New York Times best-seller list. The film version, in black and white, stars Henry Fonda, Charles Laughton, Don Murray and numerous name actors of the day.

USC professor Drew Casper provides a commentary -- the only DVD extra, unfortunately. Where Preminger pulled off the trick of turning the potentially boring business of filibusters and rules of order into high drama, Casper does the reverse, turning an examination of this exciting drama into a numbing lecture. It's almost 15 minutes before the professor gets around to noticing there's a movie playing in the background.

The widescreen images (2.35:1) do the film justice, working across a generous gray scale. Audio is decent.

Movie Review: Mildly Interesting Political Drama
Summary: 3 Stars

Anybody who has seen C-Span can verify the authenticity of the Senate debates portrayed in the film. All the rhetoric and long-winded posturing on display here feels real. The film is long and at times it borders on the tedious, but so is alot of Senate debate. The film is almost torpedoed by a subplot involving the skeletons in one senator's closet. The film recovers at the end for a thrilling floor vote of a controversial Secretary-of-State nominee(Henry Fonda). Probably the film's best performances come from the older cast members, Walter Pidgeon, Lew Ayres, and Paul Ford. Fonda, the film's ostensible star, basically appears in a glorified cameo and seems to be phoning it in.

Movie Review: What does it really mean?
Summary: 3 Stars

I was not satisfied by the film, even being one of Otto Preminger's. such a fine director. Everything seems overacted, lacks of the necesary suspense, even though it has the homosexual ingredient, the film is not convincing. The corruption has existed in all countries and will go on. So what does this film give me? Pshhhhh. No, I do not recommend it. Except the magnificent performance of Charles Laughton. He was and will ever be a superb actor.

Movie Review: Overlong Political Drama With Fine Performances
Summary: 3 Stars

An all-star cast breathes life into director Otto Preminger's somewhat ponderous adaptation of the Allen Drury novel. "Advise and Consent" (1962) would have benefited from a tighter script, but Preminger makes the most of the Washington political environment. Worth seeing for Charles Laughton's splendid final performance and Burgess Meredith's memorable turn as a lying witness.

May 6, 2010. I purchased this item from Amazon but wasn't able to watch it until now. Unbekown to me the item was damaged & it come fully sealed. The return for this item expired on April 6, 2010. Amazon will neither let me return it or exchange it for the same item. The movie locks up on chapter 13, so now I'm stuck with a dead horse. There is also no way to email amazon to ask them if they would let me exchange the item for the same one. I was really looking forward to seeing this movie, but I won't pay another 8 dollars & have the same thing happen all over again.
