Movie Reviews of Advise and ConsentMovie Review: A politcal potboiler Summary: 5 Stars
Otto Preminger has assembled an all star cast for this film adaptation of Allen Drury's political potboiler.
Henry Fonda is a nominee for Secretary of State who has flirted with communism earlier in his career. Walter Pidgeon is the Senate Majority Leader who is devoted to the dying President (Franchot Tone). Peter Lawford is another heavyweight Senator also working for the nomination. Newcomer Don Murray is the junior senator from Arizona who Pidgeon and Lawford choose to head up the confirmation hearings but he has is own secret to hide. George Grizzard is the senior senator from Arizona who is upset that he was snubbed for heading the confirmation hearing but is over zealous about passing the candidate. But on the other side is Senator Charles Laughton (in his final role) as a slimy southern Senator who will do anything, including blackmail, to stop the confirmation.
This is the quintessential political potboiler. With twists and turns around every corner. In reality, this is probably a flight of fantasy but for those not in national politics, it is a great behind the scene look at how the Senate works.

Movie Review: Scandal = the half of the sin! Summary: 5 Stars
After the first punch given for Victim in 1961, the theme of homosexuality was carved in relief in the politic sand. All of us know about Preminger `s fearlessness shown previously in films such as The man with the golden arm or Anatomy of a murder.
In this opportunity, this talented director repeats the formula and strikes again with this demolishing work, where the unsaid prevails over the explicit language. The amazing and pitifully last Opus of that privileged actor : Charles Laughton in his crocodile aspect as Senate `s member will be simply unforgettable at the moment to resume the most ravishing performances in the XX Century.
A mature film that deserves and requires from you all your attention. It is solid work under any angle you consider it. One of the best movies in that decade and definitively a must -see in case you haven' t.
Movie Review: A Senatorial Saga Summary: 5 Stars
What begins as an effort by a group of U.S. senators to confirm a young idealist named Robert A. Leffingwell as Secretary of State soon becomes an examination of the lives - and especially, the past lives - of Leffingwell and members of the Senate. In ADVISE AND CONSENT, no one is, finally, a hero - not even Henry Fonda's Leffingwell, who once flirted with Communism and who lies under oath. First-rate performances are given by each member of the all-star cast, with the most striking characterizations coming from Burgess Meredith as a meek former Communist who testifies against Leffingwell and Charles Laughton as the irrepressible South Carolina senator who opposes Leffingwell's values but who is ultimately magnanimous. Five stars for Otto Preminger's panoramic Washington drama.
Movie Review: Advise and Consent Summary: 5 Stars
An engrossing adaptation of Allen Drury's best-selling novel, and loosely based on real-life lawmakers, Preminger's incisive study of Congressional wheeling and dealing boasts a dazzling ensemble cast, including Pidgeon, Murray, Peter Lawford, Gene Tierney, Franchot Tone, and Burgess Meredith. In addition to a strong performance from Fonda, the film is especially memorable thanks to Laughton's grinning, snake-slick performance--sadly, his last. Smear campaigns, public-image management, and behind-the-scenes machinations are all part of the senatorial rat race in "Advise and Consent," an ultra-realistic drama that seems timelier than ever.
Movie Review: Don't miss this one. Summary: 5 Stars
This was the first movie that I am aware of which took political drama seriously. Very good plot line and excellent dialogue with a large cast of very talented actors. It's hard to ask for more. They surely make very few like it today. Perhaps there is no need because this one still stands as a landmark of the genre. I had not seen it for quite a few years and recently bought a DVD of it only to rediscover just how great it was. It even approaches the subject of homosexuality which was a very brave and difficult thing to do back then. If you haven't seen it yet then there is a great time ahead waiting for you.
