Movie Reviews of Adam's ApplesMovie Review: Good vs evil, done in an engaging, classy way Summary: 5 Stars
This is the first Danish film I saw, thanks to recommendations from a colleague and a DVD shop worker. I picked it randomly from the set of DVDs I bought in Copenhagen, and what an experience it has been to watch it. I found it the movie equivalent of the unputdownable book. I saw from the special features later than the director got the idea for the story from the thought of making everything bad shown in Danish films happen to one guy - and how that guy still thinks things are OK.
I don't understand some of the reviews which talk about people being in splits during the movie - I think I laughed aloud twice. There are some pretty unexpected twists, especially the one at the end. But equally, there were moments which make you flinch. The changes the characters go through are handled very well.
There is a thunderstorm at one critical point, and the twist at the end, which seemed to be a bit over- the- top. Perhaps that is intentional, and has something to do with the Director's original idea of maybe mocking some films gently. I'm just guessing.
Anyway, it's been a treat even though much of the backdrop was alien for me (e.g. the Book of Job). The story, visuals, performances and music are great. I look forward to exploring more Danish films.
Movie Review: Can't believe it took so long Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this nearly two years ago with Danish fiends and have been waiting for a local version... somehow it took two years.
In full agreement with the first reviewer who wrote with more detail and with greater and more eloquent length than will be here. But this movie is incredibly well-crafted in the stark extremes that are not only brought up but appear to be openly examined to allow the audience the shock of feeling that they should feel this or that based on the conventions that we often imprison ourselves in.
Tendency to think to self: Offense or shame or I-shouldn't be laughing at this, may come to mind at times, but this movie made me feel like it was a litmus test of my own psychological tendencies towards atrophied groupthink.
These moments or debates don't come up enough here; for being a standard U.S. citizen this movie is in the capacity of Eddie Izzard stand-up or Kurt Vonnegut worlds in permitting a vacation of the mind from the daily preoccupations and recycled comments to the matters brought up and discussed and done permitting the viewer to be part, without embarassment but occasionally with a bit of discomfort, for fun... c'est la vie.
And to my favorite Denmarkperson, Skol!
Movie Review: A Most Wonderful and Unexpected Find Summary: 5 Stars
Adams Apples is the blackest comedy that I have seen to date. I took a chance on this film not really knowing much about it, expect that is starred Mads Mikkelsen (he is an amazing actor) and that was enough for me.In my opinion he steals the whole movie. This movie is a great find and it really does make you think about good and evil, but in a totally unexpected way.One of the main characters, Ivan, only sees good in everything no matter how screwed up his life is and refuses to see it as anything but perfect becasue God loves him. The other main character,Adam, sees himself as the embodiment of evil and proclaims himself so and sets out to show Ivan that in fact God does not love him and that is why his life is as totally messed up as it is. What follows is the funniest jet black comedy, that keeps on getting blacker and funnier through out some crazy twists and turns. Though do keep in mind this movie is not exactly what we Americans would term politically corret, and that is a very good thing indeed.A movie well worth the subtitles.
Movie Review: One of my absolute favorite Danish films! Summary: 5 Stars
Adam's Apples is, without a doubt, one of the finest examples of Danish black comedy in existence. This movie was one of the earliest Danish films that I saw, but it was memorable because of how good it was. I own it and have seen it many times, because it's simply that good.
The cast includes some of Denmark's most talented actors and is extremely well done, even for a Danish film (which says a *lot*, as the bar is quite high to begin with, in my opinion).
What I like most about this movie is that you never quite know where it's going to go. At times you suspect that something is going to happen, or that the plot will veer in a particular direction, but more often than not you end up completely wrong. The surprising turns, coupled with a mixture of both humor and genuine drama, are what sets this film apart and makes it memorable.
I definitely encourage anyone into Danish film to check this one out. No Danish film aficionado's collection is completely without this title.
Movie Review: Excellence and economy of film and story Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best movies I have seen in years. There are no wasted scenes or dialog. Everything ties in at the end. The character of Ivan is rather unbelievable at the start, an nihlist and idealist. The setting is also ideal, a country church in the sun and the wonderful breeze, beautiful and serene...heavenly. When Ivans worldview or view of God is changed so is the set and other characters. Adams character is also brilliantly and subtly acted. His change is gradual but complete by the end. A look here, a moment of hesitation there, Adam seems unsure about his life and Ivan ends up being his rock and leader. From the very beginning Ivan refers to Adam as his assistant as if he knew the outcome of their relationship. Well done! I had to watch it twice as I have been mostly watching more mainstream hollywood movies and kept waiting for something to happen at the start. Highly recommended!
