Movie Reviews of Absolute Zero

Movie Review: Absolute Nonsense
Summary: 3 Stars

"Absolute Zero" is one of the stupidest disaster epics of the last few years. In what is probably the least scientifically accurate film since Ed Wood described the particles of sunlight in "Plan Nine From Outer Space," we are treated to a very confusing plot that involves a convergence of global warming (of course), a violent shift in the polarity of the earth's magnetic field, and an ancient cave painting found in Antarctica. Who knew that a polarity shift would not only entomb Miami in ice, but simultaneously make Alaska tropical, all the while making all of equatorial earth dark? I clearly need to brush up on my physics.

Sprinkle in a bit of corporate greed, a pointless anti-military screed, and good looking ex-lovers who (obviously) are still in love; ladle in a good helping of inane script, terrible acting and direction (note especially the complete lack of reaction from the mother and daughter duo who have just lost their husband and father, respectively); stir with a heaping helping of unbelievably bogus special effects (I like the windstorm best), and you have the recipe for "Absolute Zero."

This film is utterly detestable as a conventional movie, however, if you are a diehard fan of movies so bad they're fun to mock, this is a sure winner. I gave it three stars: as a quality motion picture it is way off the low end of the rating scale; as trash cinema it has some wonderful moments of eye rolling, but is recommended only for experienced bad movie fans.

Movie Review: A Poor Man's "Day After Tomorrow"
Summary: 3 Stars

First, you have to go into these direct-to-video flicks with a certain mindset, my wife calls it 'dumbing down'. But insults aside, taking a laid back approach with a bowl of popcorn and an easy chair works - especially after a hectic day, nothing beats a good B-movie.

Absolute Zero was clearly attempting to ride the coattails of it's more famous predecessor, but on a shoestring budget. Still, for all it's shortcomings, this is a decent example from the Saturday SciFi fare. Believe me, they can be MUCH worse. (laughing) And sometimes a really good one actually gets made. i.e. Maximum Velocity.

It was really nice to see beautiful Erika Eleniak - she's aging well. I suspect she'll continue to look stunning even in her sixties - ala Jaclyn Smith/Jane Seymour. And this is one of the better Jeff Fahey vehicles. Believe me, the man can act if given proper direction as this film proves - and fans of tv's 'Lost' can attest to as well.

My only serious complaint, and this is to all these B-grade directors: If you're going to show an animal in distress, especially a dog, show it being 'saved'. Nothing po's the general public more than hurting man's best friend. Don't believe me? Ask Vick his thoughts on the subject. Take a few seconds of film to show the dog being saved - you'll win legions of fans, even if they hate your film.

Bored and looking for some lite fare to pass away a night? Check this flick out.

Movie Review: Actually, pretty decent once you get past the title
Summary: 3 Stars

OK, the science is nonsense. And winds at absolute zero? Winds=friction=heat, so nonsense. Still, it's nice to see Jeff Fahey (an amazing actor; note how different he is, vocally, posture, etc., from his role on The Lost). "Science is always right" he says. Nope. One could argue the opposite. Still and all, the script is very good, with some great lines, and there's lots of action. The FX aren't up to Day After Tomorrow, but aren't totally hokey. It's a B movie, but a good B movie, and definitely not a D movie (like Sunshine!). For the price, a real bargain, and a great addition to your disaster film library.
One little oddity: I guess the script called for Fahey's character to be David Koch, and the DVD case repeats this. But everyone calls him David Kotchman (or Kotzman).

Movie Review: Good choice for "Bad Movie Night"
Summary: 3 Stars

I love end of the world disaster movies. This one ranks as the most scientifically inaccurate one I've ever seen. My husband, a former 8th grade science teacher, decided if he ever goes back to teaching, he'd have his physics class watch this movie as a final exam and write everything that's wrong with it. I think they'd need a full 24 hours... (Someone freezes as the "absolute zero" cold approaches, yet someone else maybe 30 feet away is perfectly fine?) It's good for a laugh, and the acting isn't as bad as a lot of these movies. I'd recommend this to a group of college friends who plan to have a couple drinks and make fun of the movie. This ranks about equal with Solar Attack, and I'd say it's better than Dean Cain's Post Impact.

Movie Review: it's alright
Summary: 3 Stars

You have to rent this knowing that it's a low budget disaster flick.
Because there is nothing special about the effects.
I think I can do a better job with Adobe- LoL
But it still isn't as bad as you may think.
The acting is ok and lets face it, no garners interest in this film
because of acting. They want to see the disaster take shape and I
believe they do a good job showcasing that. It is more like a low
3 instead of a high 2 so I'll give it 3 stars. Really, it's not
bad, I was entertained to a certain degree. Definitely not a must-see
but more like a tv movie when nothing else is on.
