Movie Reviews of Abba - In Concert 1979Movie Review: It Was Twenty-Five Years Ago...ABBA Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great DVD for fans that want to see ABBA as they really were in the seventies. However, remember that this is over twenty-five years ago and the quality of the picture; the camera work and the sound (God forbid) are not anything like they are now. It is fun to see ABBA camp it up on stage and the vocals (although tough to hear) are actually excellent. The outfits are a riot and only Benny seems to survive the 'big butt syndrome' by hiding behind the keyboards. No more tight outfits, please. The first few songs are not complete in entirety and there is quite a bit of editing for on-the-scenes- commentary about the excitement of doing their first tour. Eventually there are some full-length songs. It seems as if this was a documentary filmed for television in the format it is edited, so be prepared. This is not like a "Bee Gees-One Night Only" concert or an "Eagles Farewell" tour that goes from song to song without interruption. It is more of a documentary than a simple concert, but that shouldn't matter one bit for any ABBA fan.
Movie Review: Still Hungry Summary: 4 Stars
ABBA was great during their concert scenes, but we get too much of useless footage. Since there is so little footage of ABBA in concert, I was hoping this would give me my fill. I didn't care to see roller skaters, roadies, or kids practicing or singing ABBA songs. I wanted to see ABBA. While on stage, they have 4 individual shows going on, and they are great. They shine the light on the whole band, at times, and that's enjoyable. When they performed, "Dancing Queen", I thought the clapping wouldn't end, but they followed it with "Does Your Mother Know", and that particular version, blew me away, and it seemed to have the same effect on the audience. The printout that comes with the DVD, is mostly about the creator of this compilation, patting himself on the back, which did not impress me. I was left hungry for more ABBA concert footage. The camera close-ups were usually too close. Agnetha and Frida look great, and performed great.
Movie Review: Brings back memories and is good for the price. Summary: 4 Stars
I saw ABBA during this tour in Seattle. Wow did this bring back some memories!
My freinds and I in high school were all into Led Zeppelin and the like, and if any of us owned an ABBA record we sure didn't tell anyone, so it was sure funny how myself and my friends jumped at the chance to see them in concert. That was probably the best rock concert I've ever been to, and I sure don't see anything coming in the future to beat 'em.
I really wish this had had more concert footage and less other stuff, but that's the way it goes. Still, great for the price especially if you're an ABBA fan and you remember seeing them in concert.
Movie Review: Great Concert Dragged Down By A Decent Rockumentary Summary: 4 Stars
I love ABBA. I have all their dvds available. I brought "ABBA In Concert" last Christmas but haven't found the time to review it until this morning. What can I tell you about this 25 year old tape? Well, let me just say that the perfromances are nothing short of excellent. The remastering job is superb, both visually as well as audio. You feel, for the mos part, like you're at the concert. However, there's one porblem: too much documentary, not enough concert. I was hoping we'd get a full concert rather than a few complete performances and a ton of documentary footage. So while I do recommend this dvd, keep in mind it isn't a complete concert dvd.
Movie Review: Flawed 5.1 sound but still a good buy Summary: 4 Stars
IMHO, the 1977 Australian tour shown in ABBA The Movie was better, but
this concert is still quite good.
Here's the deal with the sound. The stereo soundtrack on this DVD
matches the sound of the first release of ABBA Live on CD. It may not
be up to somebody's standards, but it sounds like it was supposed to.
In the 5.1 soundtracks, OTOH, the vocals are greatly diminished in
volume. You might be able to fix it by boosting your center channel,
but I would just stick with the stereo soundtrack.
