Movie Reviews of Abba - In Concert 1979Movie Review: Rating ONLY for the hard core ABBA fans ..... Summary: 5 Stars
Because as far as the DVD is concerned I believe it's a rip-off of sorts.... The qualification being that this is one of the cheapest music DVD's on the market, and also probably one of the shortest. (I was surprised when it finished .....)
First the DVD contains very very few complete songs since this is really a tour travelog made for TV in the 9170's. The quality of course sucks big time and the sound ... well lets not even comment on that .... For the fan of ABBA of course the group could do no wrong even in the silly looking spandex suits thant today look like they are coming home from a cheap personal trainer exercise program .....
Certainly you can not compare this to the 'Dance' DVD of Fleetwood Mack and the 'Zoom' DVD from ELO which are old groups that really did cut new concert DVD's ... and they are fabulous!!!
OK so ABBA fans enjoy but for anyone you'll see it one and relegate this DVD to the back of the pile .....
Movie Review: ABBA in Concert Summary: 5 Stars
The 1979 Wembly Arena concert in London encompassed footage from the American tour. The group maps out the tour on a cake shaped like the U.S. The cities are mostly across the northern tier. In London, they wear blue and white spandex against a background of icebergs. The concert is grand, and ABBA is poised. Frida's dance routine in Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! is enjoyable. Her movements have the grace of a professional dancer. The women look to be six feet tall! Voulez-Vous is smooth. Hole In Your Soul has more fire than the studio cut. And isn't it provocative when the women kneel beside the jamming Lasse Wellander on Does Your Mother Know? Benny tickles the ivories midway through I Have A Dream, and Agnetha's eyebrows go up for Take A Chance On Me. Agnetha's daughter, Linda, appears for I Have A Dream. As a finale, Benny drags out his accordion for The Way Old Friends Do. This live version is on the Super Trouper album. Soaking up the applause!
Movie Review: Great to see this on DVD now...... Summary: 5 Stars
I remember watching this video on a PBS Soundstage program in 1980 or 1981. Before that I my have heard of ABBA on radio but never paid much attention. But after seeing this documentary on PBS I was hooked on them. To bad it was at the end of them being a group. I recorded it on Beta Format tape at the time and have had it since [I still have a beta player in closet]. I often wondered how I could transfer it to DVD until I seen they had released it on DVD. I have watched it many times since and have enjoyed it just as much as I did the 1st time I ever seen it. I read a lot of gripping here on what is on this DVD. Remember this was a made for TV presentation. If you watch the interview of the guy that did the filming you will know why there is nothing more to add. If you go to this web site it explains it in detail [...] . I'm so happy to have it on DVD now. That is all I have to say about it....g'day
Movie Review: ABBA IN CONCERT LIVE AT WEMBLEY STADIUM ENGLAND Summary: 5 Stars
MOST OF THE SHOTS HERE ARE FROM WEMBLEY STADIUM, ALTHOUGH SOME ARE ALSO FROM THEIR TOUR IN THE USA. IT IS AN EXCELLENT ALBUM, BUT UNFORTUNATELY, THEY HAD SOME SOUND PROBLEMS AND UNFORTUNATELY DID NOT RE-RECORD THE SECTIONS ON THE FOLLOWING NIGHTS. THERE WAS ALSO AN ABBERATION IN THAT BENNY MIXED THIS DVD, INSTEAD OF THE REGULAR SOUND TECH, AND THAT SHOWS CLEARLY IN THE DIMISHED QUALITY OF THE SOUND, AND THE TOO HIGH LEVELS FOR THE AUDIENCE CLAPPING AND CHEERING. I FIND THAT IF YOU SHUT DOWN THE BASS COMPLETELY, ON THE SONGS "SUMMER NIGHT CITY" AND "DANCING QUEEN" THEN IT ALMOST IS NORMAL ABBA QUALITY. IT IS ALSO UNFORTUNATE THAT THE NORMAL STEREO CHANNEL DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY ON THE RECORDING, AND IT DEFAULTS TO SURROUND SOUND 5.1 WHICH ON STEREO SPEAKERS IS SOMEWHAT MUDDLED. I WISH THEY WOULD RE-RELEASE THIS WITH A PROPER REMIX AND WORKING SOUND TRACKS FOR STEREO.
Movie Review: GREAT Nostalgia Summary: 5 Stars
Hey, this is a 30-year-old documentary. If you're expecting the camera flyerovers of an audience during full-length versions of their hits in 5.1, you'll be disappointed.
If, however, you want a great piece of history and nostalgia, including the 70s documentary style - some of it probably even shot in 16mm - this is absolutely for you. It will take you back.
So, too, imho, a far sight better than the clumsy pseudo-storyline needed to prop up "ABBA - The Movie".
When this first aired, I was doing engineering with PBS. Still have the original U-matic tape from the broadcast and it's always remained a fave for the goose-bump performances interspersed with backstage/hotel/roadie stuff. Heck, took me ages to find the thing on VHS. Glad to have it on DVD.
