Movie Reviews of AC/DC - Live at DoningtonMovie Review: hard rock heaven... Summary: 5 Stars
...how would i describe the ac/dc live at donington dvd? well, the words 'holy f**k!' come to mind immediately. this is without a doubt the largest single congregation of humans i've ever seen. (remarkably, in the commentary supplement of the disc, angus says this wasn't the largest audience they've played to!) this show is all about big: angus is dwarfed by monstrous speaker cabinets the size of apartment buildings. the colours on display make you think spielberg - long shots of the stage look like the mothership from the conclusion of close encounters of the third kind. roaming helicopter shots capture the colossal scope of the concert (there's nothing more cool than overhead helicopter footage at a rock show, right?) if francis ford coppola was to direct a concert picture it would look like this. it all becomes even more gloriously majestic as the sun sets on donington park, leicestershire, bringing out the colours in vivid magnificence. mike fraser's audio mix is powerfully awesome, that's a guarantee, of course. you can feel the low end marhsall stack growl from angus' gibson sg bore into your chest like a jackhammer.brian johnson commands the crowd with the authority of winston churchill, johnson the perfect foil to angus' grinning strip teases and exploding guitar solos. there is something purely satisfying in the way malcolm and angus deliver three chords, applying what i call their distinct 'youngian' technique: malcolm's concrete foundation dressed with angus' choice, succulent, frothing guitar licks. drummer chris slade and bassist cliff williams lay down the law that allows only ac/dc the ability to make a monster festival seem like an intimate club show. if you're an ac/dc fan you are officially ordered to take a look at this dvd. i've seen the bad boys two or three times, but never like this. when historians look back on the history of rock, it will be finely, lovingly, ultra high energy, respectfully crafted documents like this show that will showcase the epitome of rock's evolution from its chuck berry genesis. ultimately, the most delightful surprise found within ac/dc's live at donington dvd is not the unending catalogue of rock gems, gems that we expect from ac/dc, but rather the blues jams performed in the breakdown sections of songs like jailbreak and high voltage. it's akin to finding hidden bonus material. what you discover in these pieces are brand new songs in themselves, killer instrumental works, seething with raw, emotional energy. what you discover in these pieces is hard rock heaven...
Movie Review: The Ultimate AC/DC concert of the post-Bon Scott era! Summary: 5 Stars
This concert ROCKS THE HOUSE! An AC/DC fan at the tender age of 3 thanks to an aunt who happen to love BACK IN BLACK, I've followed them extensively (to the fineline of being either a fan or obsessed individual) over the years. This is one of the highest points for them. In NO BULL and STIFF UPPER LIP concerts, they would slowly slip into seeming like they were finally getting to their respected ages.
I doubt many overdubs were used in the mixing of the soundtrack, unless something happened with the audio and no other option was left but to overdub or replace. I think that the problem may perhaps be that some of the cameras were not shooting at the same speed as the others which can cause a mismatch to the audio. OR while editing the shots cut two fast to keep the timing of the audio right (I've seen these things happen before). Also, there are many mikes place all around to catch the sound of the crowd and area ambiance as well as the fact Brian SHOUTS "Hey Mama!" which may explain why it got picked up.
When doing a stereo downmix, especially to VHS(up until now that's been the only way to see this concert)...certain elements are lost and buried underneath other sound elements that have a few more frequecies left to remain audiable when competing with everything else in the mix (crowd, band, area ambiance...etc, etc.). This is very true of a 5.1 mix.
Everyone has to remember that Sony/Epic has only recently come to ownership of LIVE AT DONNINGTON. Up until the start of the new century, ownership was strictly Warner Bros. Sony/Epic have done LOADS to appeal to all AC/DC fans. Remastered and repackaged albums with linear notes and some unseen photos/artworks, FAMILY JEWELS which has every video for AC/DC ever made up until the start of the 1990's (the rest have to wait until enough is ready for a follow-up which will give us the rest), LIVE AT DONNINGTON with Widescreen picture and 5.1 mix! They want the material handled right for all fans.
As for different edits, it depends on the area you buy. Some countries have a standard to meet or don't perfer certain things...so an alternative edit is nothing new. As far as I can remember, this concert is basically the same you can find on the OOP Warner Video from the 90's. Right down to Angus' strip tease...
This concert ROCKS THE HOUSE! I hope that Sony/Epic will tackle LET THERE BE ROCK nextso Bon's concert film gets the same respect!
Movie Review: The Best Summary: 5 Stars
This is the pinnacle of Hard Rock, the greatest spectical ever witnessed in music. Words can't describe it, the feeling you get when this is in your dvd player. Nothing and i mean nothing not even other AC/DC realeases come close to this, this puts everything to shame. The musical performances themselves are top notch (what else would you expect from the Rock Gods)i don't think there is one mistake in this whole performance, nup i thought of one, the solo in let there be rock Ang has a little slip up. Many reviewers have been sceptical of doctoring with this release, the concert footage its self has been glossed up, in both the audio and visual departments, but as for complete overdubs there are one or two, buit its not like what some reviews have said, that the whole concert has been tampered with, if it had been i dont think they would have missed the obvious mistake Ang makes in the solo of LTBR.
Musically Everyones perfect, Brian, Ang, Mal, Cliff and yep big Chris Slade. Slade adds another dimension to AC/DC, a powerhouse on drums. Not that there was anything wrong with old Phil, i think Chris just gives the band a bit more power (if thats humanly possible, but then again its AC/DC anything's possible). Ang shreds some amazing solos, showing his absolute mastery of the guitar, in my opinion theres only two men alive or dead that can match Angus, they are: Toni Iommi (black sabbath) and Jimmy Page (led zeppelin), but still in my mind Ang has it over them. As for the visual show, well 26 cameras and a helicopter filming you can't get better coverage than that, the concert is filmed perfectly. The stage visuals well once again its AC/DC they always deliver the goods, you get an awesome stage design (multistorey), various massive inflateable devils and of corse Rosie, Ang and the podium in the middle of the crowd makes another appearance, and just when you think how can they possible put another awesome stage visual that tops that, well once again its AC/DC, for the encore you get 21 fully loaded cannons firering their arses off way up over the crowd.
Nothing chalenges this concert, its the single greatest 2 hours of music in history. So don't read anymore reviews, stop thinking should i shouldn't i and go out and buy it, don't be a [...] and download it. cheers.
Movie Review: AC/DC At there finest Summary: 5 Stars
The word going around on the AC/DC forum at Elektra when this first hit the market was that some of the tracks on this DVD had been over dubbed. Meaning that its not the original sound found on the VHS version! And no one knows why as of yet? But that dosent stop this show from beeing worth buying, only the hardcore AC/DC fan will notcie a few slight changes! Its nothing to worry about, the sound is absolutly fantastic!AC/DC's greatest show is now on DVD. Which is great because I, like many others had the shoddy VHS version that Angus's guitar was not hearable, so I never even knew what the original solos sounded like, the only thing i could tell a diffrence on was TNT it seemed to have been more the "oi oi oi" of the LIVE SE albums chant on TNT ...but again, its nothing to worry about! The extras are a few alternate camera angles! but there a bonus feature, there not one of those ones where you can press your remotes "camera angle" feature, there seprate all together! Theres not one for every song, or is there any two angles for the same song! Most of them are Angus and Brian, one or two for Cliff and Malcolm, and i'm not even sure if Chris Slade got one or not? There is a short Audio Commentry with Angus and Malcolm and they give you some info about some intresting things! And there is a discography of pretty much all the world released AC/DC albums, with Angus and Malcolm putting some Audio Commentry over the top of them if youd like some info about those albums!!!! apart from the new dubbing. This DVD isgreat, and will be the video to make all you non AC/DC fans eyes pop open and hear a sound unlike no other! and the enormous crowd headbanging along to the worlds greatest Rock N Roll band thats sure to make you see this band in a whole new light if you know nothing of the worlds most electrifieing band. This DVD is no disapoinment, and features more footage then released on the VHS! for egsample, the VHS did not come with "High Voltage" and tho its seen as to why it was cut because of some malfunctions with Angus's guitar, its there now for you to enjoy! - this reveiw was done again by me because the damn thing wont save my edit i made to my previous review when i didnt own this DVD yet!
