Movie Reviews of AC/DC - Live at DoningtonMovie Review: HOLY CHRISTMAS, THIS ROCKS MY ACE OFF!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Are you DAMNED? Ok, lets talk about AC/DC. This is a band that never gets weak, these guys are by far the greatest rock and roll act around, and heres why.
Watch this DVD from 1991, LIVE AT DONNINGTON. I was at the video store the other night renting a movie for me and a lady friend when the box for this DVD caught my eye. I couldn't say no, and proceeded to spend my last three bucks on the rental. Now, as many of us know in 1991 AC/DC was fronted by BRIAN JOHNSON and not the completely legendary BON SCOTT who fronted the original mach in through the seventies up until his death in 1980. Now, there are a lot of die hard BON SCOTT fans out there that would refuse to give BRIAN JOHNSON the time of day, but to me that is a mistake.
Now, me of course, am quite partial to the eccentric wails and attitude of BON SCOTT, and BRIAN JOHNSON is a different spectacle all together.. but.. he is still a sight to see on stage. There is ABSOLUTELY nothing lame about it, BRIAN JOHNSON still kicks much, much ace. And the rest of the band sure as the devil himself, blazes the stage as well.
I ended up watching this DVD by myself, and a little with my fifteen month old boy (he was hoopin and yellin, and clappin his hands.. ha ha) I was completley into it. With the lights down and the sound up, I was right there at Donington 1991, feeling the energy.
The stage show that night was amazing.. with the sight gags.. a giant devil during HELL AINT A BAD PLACE TO BE, a giant balloon fat chick during WHOLE LOTTA ROSIE, a giant brass bell during HELLS BELLS that JOHNSON proceeds to bash on repeatively with a large mallet.. and of course a barrage of cannons during FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK...
These guys ain't no fluke. They bleed rock, Angus doesn't play guitar, he shreds the F out it and creates sounds that make your soul scream YEAH!!!! The whole band is in gear, and BRIAN JOHNSON, who can ever imagine how he wails the way he does night after night. Oh man, a few times at the beggining it looks like he's struggling to maintain those vocals as the years go by, but three or four songs in and its flawless. His stage presence is nothing to stick your nose up at either. I was digging it at one point where he loses his hat, keeps running around like a maniac, and then when you think its gone, he spots it on the ground kicks it up in the air, grabs it, and secures it right back onto his dome.. gives us a look like, "thats right" and then goes right back into being a maniac.
The set list is incredible covering all aspects of the bands career. We open with a killer THUNDERSTRUCK to get your chills going, and we are graced with killer versions of FIRE YOUR GUNS, TNT, THE JACK and you know, all the essentials... but the highlight for me was the sensational jam session version of JAILBREAK... man I hope these guys have one more tour left in 'em... I gotta see these guys at least once for myself. If you never got a chance, well theres lots of discs.. Donington is the one if you wanna see a great BRIAN JOHNSON era AC/DC. Lotta fire in this beast.
