Movie Reviews of ABBA The Movie

Movie Review: 5 stars for the band and the music
Summary: 5 Stars

Even as a kid, my expectations at the release of ABBA The Movie were tempered by the knowledge that ABBA were good musicians and not great performers. I was lucky enough to attend the Perth concerts where most of the live footage was filmed (I can see myself down the front during Dancing Queen!), and clearly remember what a strangely stiff performance ABBA gave (the movie certainly benefits from the immediacy of onstage filming). The Movie is a valuable artifact of the insane ABBAmania which existed in Australia at the time - mania that was already beginning to subside by the time ABBA finally returned on their world tour a year after they first visited. It's a shame Universal didn't capitalise on this by documenting the reams of media reportage of the time as dvd features. The Movie looks and sounds fantastic, though, especially the concert sequences, and I am amazed how beautiful Frida and Agnetha look, and how perfectly complementary. The "story" is hopeless and obviously done on the fly, but every time ABBA are onscreen the movie powers up. Try to find the limited edition 2-disc set, though, because it contains an excellent, recent reminiscence by Benny, Bjorn and director Lasse Hallstrom, as well as galleries and tv spots; again, not a lot, but certainly better than the single disc version.

Movie Review: My Personal Review of ABBA The Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

While this movie was probably very unpolished when it was first produced, the re-mix of this movie is terrific. To any ABBA fan, this Movie made you feel like YOU were actually at a ABBA concert. For myself raising a very young family in the 70's, we were unable to travel to New York or Boston to actually see one of their American Concerts. I STILL very much enjoyed their music. I have four other ABBA DVD's and while they show you a side of the height of their fame, I still never felt I was actually at one of their concerts. With ABBA The Movie, while it had a very simple story line, you saw things that went on back stage and behind the sceens. I truely enjoy ALL my ABBA DVD's, this one was more like being at one of their concerts while the others came a bit short of that mark. These opinions come from an over 50 ABBA fan and will forever be one!!!. I would highly recommend this movie to any ABBA fan that wants more from a group that I had the GREAT misfortune to miss LIVE. I was raising a very small family at the time and while working in Health Care, did not have the means to travel far to enjoy one of their MANY WONDERFUL USA concerts. A+++++ in my book... My BEST to ALL the ABBA Fans.... Art Caldwell

Movie Review: I was there!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Back in 1977 Abba Mania had reached fever pitch here in Australia....It was us Aussies who launched Abba high into the charts by making Mamma Mia and Waterloo instant number ones at a time when the UK did not want anything to do with them. I queued from 9am to 4-30pm in the pouring rain to get front row seats at the Sydney Concert which was a sea of umbrellas. At 8pm (rain still pouring) Abba took to the stage. The girls hair seemed to swing in unison as they clawed towards the audience singing "Tiger". Abba had arrived. I was 19 back then and still love Abba dearly. I now have the special edition DVD and with the DTS surround sound turned up full boar its just like being at the concert again and even better still watching it with an entertainment projector on my living room wall...The film captures the hectic 2 weeks in March 1977 when Abba toured Australia at a time when 4 in every 5 household had at least one Abba record and every single Aussie lived and breathed Abba..Do yourself a favor and buy this movie as it is as timeless and classic as Abba themselves

Movie Review: ABBA - The Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I last saw this production in 1981. I was stationed at the American Embassy in New Delhi at the time. Someone had it on a VHS tape, second or third generation ... it was a horrible copy. BUT: it was ABBA! This DVD release is SO much better ... WIDESCREEN ... DTS sound ... CLEAR! It immediately brought me back to that time period. ABBA had their fingers on the pulse of a time period that still pulsated with the Beatles' music, James Bond, the upheavals of Vietnam, the Munich Massacre, the Russians in Afghanistan, Nixon's resignation, etc. Their music, in contrast to many events of the time, was cheerful/upbeat. The girls in the group were positively lovely, the outfits the band wore were great, and the MUSIC was absolutely outstanding. This DVD covers it all. Forget the inane supposed "story," sit back, and be fully entertained by one of the world's premier musical groups. ABBA: like the song that ends the movie - THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC!

Movie Review: I can't wait to watch this movie again !!!
Summary: 5 Stars

My best memories when I was a teenager are definetively linked to Abba. It was 1975 when I first heard Waterloo and, it sounded me so wonderful that it hooked me... for ever !!!. I didn't have the chance to watch Abba The Movie at the time it was released all around the world...I was living in Cuba at that time, where the movie was never shown, years later, studiying in Moscow, USSR I finally had the chance, surprisely the movie was shown in some Moscow theaters and I was excited watching it in Jan 1st 1984...when Abba was already disbanded !!!!. That was the first and the last time so far. Even when the movie story is simple and it is obvious it was just invented to show the band at its best in the Australia tour, it still captivating me, I still remember some wonderfull scenes, the music and my joy watching it at the widescreen theater...so can't wait to watch it again and of course to own it as well
