Movie Reviews of A Year in ProvenceMovie Review: Light enjoyable chance to live vicariously in France Summary: 4 Stars
This is light entertainment that can take you away from your own life for awhile. Its very well written and acted. John Thaw is wonderful as Peter Mayles and he captures the spirit of the book.
However, if you are one of those people who insist on a very literal interpretation of the book, you may find fault with this dramatization. "A Year in Provence" was a small book and this DVD is four episodes in length. There is a lot of added material, but its very much in the style of Mayles' book. While I enjoyed the book very much, I found the DVD to be just as much fun with the added bonus of the scenery of Provence.
When we finished watching this DVD, we missed being in Provence with the characters in the story. A warning to potential viewers- you will find yourself on the computer perusing property for sale in Provence when you've finished watching it!
Movie Review: A lighthearted jewel Summary: 4 Stars
Peter Mayle's autobiographical novel "A Year in Provence" receives the film treatment in this lighthearted jewel of a series. Mayle and his wife leave urban, mundane lives in London to really "live" in a 200 year-old farmhouse in bucolic Provence, France. Exqusite food and wine, excentric workers, visitors and neighbors, idylic weather (with the exception of the frigid "Mistral" wind), all combine to create a story of extraordinary depth and whimsy. Mayle and his wife long for the conveniences of their former lives, but at the end of the day can't bring themselves to consider anywhere else but Provence their home. A great series, almost perfect but for the full screen presentation. Wishing that this could have been reconfigured anamorphically for a 16x9 widescreen tv.
Movie Review: A Delight in Provence Summary: 4 Stars
Except for the title and the two main characters, A Year in Provence is nothing like the book. But put that aside and take it for what it is, a delightful look at adopting a place and its people. It's a story that makes you laugh at the different and sometimes smelly people in this small town. And it will touch you when they open their hearts to the Brits. The hacking in combining the French & English languages is truely outrageous, and make sure you listen to the way the Parisian pronounce the word house. Salute & enjoy!
Movie Review: a delightful year Summary: 4 Stars
This is a pure delight to watch. What fun to see how the French think and do things and how the English couple react. It is just plain fun and I will watch it again and again. The only thing that would have made this story better would have been to have subtitles for the many lines of dialogue spoken in that language. Even so, you can get the gist of what is going on without any trouble.
Movie Review: A Year of Amusement! Summary: 4 Stars
THis film is alot of fun and though some of it is in French and a mixture of French and English-it only increases the humor as the characters continue to misunderstand each other. The ending teaches us that we can all come together in mutual understanding, in spite of our differences!
