Movie Reviews of A Year in Provence

Movie Review: Great DVD!
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife and I watched both DVDs in the set this weekend. It was great! Very funny and very interesting. It should be required viewing for anyone considering moving overseas, regardless of the country. Your move will be what you make of it and how much work you're willing to do to try and "fit in". The Mayle's did their best to learn the language and culture, to make friends, to attend and have parties, etc. They also learned what true friendship is all about along the way, and that patience truly is a virture. The story about the "big house" and the rooster will floor you!

Movie Review: Love the French, its easy
Summary: 5 Stars

Hey, you have heard all the stories of the French...well, perhaps you will see some of that in this movie, but, you are going to understand the French a bit more after watching this wonderful movie. I have watched it many times over and find it keeps calling me back when I want to escape to some place better than where I am. Lean back on your favorite sofa, pour a glass of wine, cut some good bread and feed your brain and senses with this one. What a wonderful delight to see and experience a different, and somewhat slower pace to life.

Movie Review: Another Great BBC Series.
Summary: 5 Stars

We watched and enjoyed this series over a decade ago and bought the VHS tape. We lent it out never to see it again. Just glad to have it back now on DVD. Peter Mayle has written a few books since this series, but I think this is his best. He even wrote the script for the film "A Good Year" based on this series. The characters in the series are very memorable and it doesn't hurt a bit to know a little French to help you understand the minor sub-plots that are introduced into the story line. All in all very enjoyable.

Movie Review: I am so glad this is on DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

I have about worn out my VHS copies!! I love Peter Mayle's books and the BBC did a great job with this series. Sometimes the French is hard to understand, but if you are familar with the books you'll have no trouble following Peter and Annie's adventures. Remember Peter had trouble with the language as well! I have to say my husband, who has not read any of the books, can't stand this movie, it always puts him to sleep. Good for me, because I can enjoy watching in quiet!

Movie Review: Love Provence all over again!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an hearty and wholly marvelous adapation of Peter Mayle's ever-popular writing! Filmed on location, Tucker is able to creatively bring Mayle's cast of characters to life. Of course, some names and scenarios have been changed in the series; however, the overall spirit of Mayle's work is well-preserved. John Thaw is superb in his role as Peter Mayle, and Lindsay Duncan is convincing in her portrayal of Annie Mayle. This is truly a "must see" series!
