Movie Reviews of A Walk on the Moon

Movie Review: Review of Walk on the Moon
Summary: 5 Stars

I enjoyed this movie for a lot of reasons. I thought all the actors did a good job. There were no crashes, car or boat races, fist fights, murders, explosions, or special effects. Just the story of a woman realizing something important has passed her by as she watches her own daughter beginning to leave her childhood behind. I generally do not like the way sex scenes are done in movies -- they're more soft porn than anything else, I think. I hated such scenes in "Vanilla Sky." However, I must say the scene in the bus with Pearl and Walker is the most erotic, tastefully done such visual I've ever seen. It was sweet, intense, and romantic. Walker is thinking about what Pearl needs and wants, and his approach is slow, gentle, and giving. Without a direct, harsh view of full bodies, there is still no doubt about the moment of complete intimacy between them. Very nicely done. The end of the movie holds no surprises, but that's OK. I liked the time setting of 1969, and the view of Jewish life. Lane, Mortensen, and Pacquin are really good.

Movie Review: A bittersweet and nostalgic romance
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't get over how thoroughly this film transported me back to 1969. I was eleven that summer, and I recall the time vividly. Everything about the production design of this movie is amazingly accurate - from the black and white TV's that only give you a viewable picture if you smack them on the side to the tie dye clothing. Viggo Mortensen and Diane Lane provide the gentle flames of this bittersweet (and clearly temporary ) romance. Liev Scrheiber gives one of his best performances as the betrayed husband, and Tovah Feldshuh is wonderful as the mensch mother in law. Ann Paquin does a terrific turn as the adolescent daughter - there isn't a bad performance anywhere here.

The music adds to the overall impact of the film with carefully chosen snippets of Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Ritchie Havens, etc. Maybe this flim won't do it for those less nostalgic for the 60's, but this movie struck me as an affectionate look back at that period. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it strikes me a a real 'sleeper' film. Not to be missed.

Movie Review: it makes my heart ache....
Summary: 5 Stars

I think most women can relate to this movie. The attraction between Dianne Lane and Viggo makes your toes curl. you can see the struggle to do the right thing and the need to follow your heart all over Dianne Lanes face in this movie. its the kind of movie that makes you feel the desire and the hunger for that all encomposing love that she finds with Viggo. and yet, you also feel her need to do the right thing by her family, and forsake her desires for them. you come away asking, would i be strong enough to do what she did? and it makes you want to cry for the ache you know her character and Viggo's must feel. ive seen it 6 times, and i cant get enough. a little side bar, the song playing durring the love scene durring the moon landing in this movie, is the SAME song playing in one of Viggos earlier movies called "Indian Runner". makes you wonder if the actors have a say in the songs played in a movie. the soundtrack for this movie is phenominal. im going to buy it as well.

Movie Review: Hey, married chicks!
Summary: 5 Stars

There must be some kind of wish fulfillment here; every married woman I know (including me) LOVES this movie, and every unmarried woman--and male--I know snoozes.

So what? What I like best is that there is no "bad guy." Each of the characters is sympathetic, just trying to get through life as best s/he can. Even the mother-in-law (brilliantly played by Tovah Feldshuh) has a heart of gold.

While hippie nookie with Viggo Mortensen is immensely appealing, the heart of this movie is with the husband, played by the devastating Liev Schreiber. I fell in love with him based on the speech he has with his daughter, talking candidly and tenderly about the night she was conceived. Fathers never talk like this to daughters in movies.

So it ends predictably. So it's unrealistic. Like the best romantic comedies, it takes quirky, believable characters in unbelievable situations, and makes a movie with heart and wit, as with "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."

Movie Review: A passionate life.
Summary: 5 Stars

For many of us, we continue to search outside ourselves for validation and worth. Such is the plight of Pearl, expertly portrayed by Diane Lane.Though set in 1969, this story could well have occurred in the year 2000, and does. As a mother of two small children, who has walked close to the fires of temptation, I felt as though my soul was being laid out in this film. I believe that in each of us, lies the desire to be 'free' and 'unfettered' as Lane portrays. Her question early on in the film, "Do you ever feel trapped by your life?", is one that resonates through many women's and men's minds daily. I was totally captivated by the performances, and was so glad to have happened upon it on the video shelves. For anyone who has felt unfulfilled and wished for passion in life, this is definite proof that loving oneself is the all important first ingredient. The most touching film I've seen in a very long time.
