Movie Reviews of A Walk in the Clouds

Movie Review: A CELESTIAL TRIP BACK TO A MORE HONORABLE TIME.
Summary: 5 Stars

Army Sgt. Paul Sutton, played by Keanu Reeves, returns home at the end of World War II and finds that no one is there to meet him at the dock. After regaining some degree of emotional equilibrium he finds that his wife, Betty, has not read any of the letters he had sent her. I'm sure that there are many soldiers, who, after returning from one of the war zones are able to relate to the feeling of insurmountable disillusionment that is inflicted upon one by such a dispiriting homecoming - a feeling that leaves a gnawing abyss where a heart ought to be. To add insult to injury, Paul discovers that he and Betty now want for different things in life, and he, disappointed with Betty's unabashed indifference to his goals, leaves with a yearning to realize his dreams. Flashbacks of the war haunt Paul habitually like an unconquerable alien depriving him of sleep. En route to Sacramento he meets the beautiful Victoria Aragon. After coming to her rescue from 2 hoodlums during the bus ride, he is ordered to get off the bus as a result of the physical altercation that ensued between Paul and the 2 hoodlums. Paul is left with no other choice but to walk the rest of the way. During the walk to Sacramento he finds Victoria sitting alone on one of her suitcases where she tearfully confides that she is pregnant by her college professor. She fears her father's reaction as he is very traditional. Again Paul comes to her rescue by offering to pretend that he is her husband. They will introduce Paul as her husband and then he will leave under the premise that he has abandoned her for her sake and for the sake of the baby. Paul is introduced to Victoria's family as well as to the picturesque vineyard aptly named THE CLOUDS. Victoria's father, Alberto Aragon, finds the announcement of the marriage so contemptible that he threatens to have the marriage annulled by the Pope. Her mother, Maria Aragon, tries to calm the air with her tangible grace. The fiery homecoming which could have turned into a war zone is doused by Victoria's grandfather, Don Pedro Aragon, who is the head of the family, and who redirects everyone's attention to Paul's case of chocolates. The chocolates seem to capture more of Don Pedro's attention than the anouncement of the marriage. Despite Alberto's tenacious show of displeasure, Paul respects him for being so protective of his family and he admires this family's propensity for adhering to old-fashioned values and traditions. The film is filled with many tender moments and it is easy to lose oneself in the flawless and spectacular cinematography. The premise embraces a time of honor that used to exist in a time now sadly forgotten. Alberto Aragon commits every conscious effort toward disliking Paul, but softens as he observes Paul shadowing Victoria during the family's attempt to save the vineyards from the petrifying effects of frost. Paul tries to leave before sunrise, but Don Pedro redirects his plans by initially laying the focus on his desire to sample more of Paul's chocolates. Don Pedro persuades Paul to stay on the farm and help with the harvest. Paul finds himself embraced by the quintessence of this close-knit family and by the yearning to be a part of such a family. I loved the scene portrayed in the harvesting of the grapes through which a few lighthearted moments emerge when Alberto immerses himself in a spirit of competitiveness, as he tries to outshine Paul. Paul almost wins Alberto's favor. Still Alberto remains suspicious as something does not quite seem to fit into place. Paul, feeling compelled to leave the farm, is torn between not being a real part of this family and his growing feelings for and loyalty to Victoria. Meanwhile, Victoria has fallen in love with Paul for being the most honorable man she has ever known. Eventually he does return home to find that his wife has found someone else. With inexplicable relief he listens as Betty informs him that she had applied for an annulment and Paul rushes back to the farm to ask Victoria for her hand in marriage. He finds an alcohol saturated Alberto sitting outside in the vineyard. The angry father who had learnt the truth hurls a lit lantern at Paul and turns the vineyard into an inferno. The family watch helplessly as their entire livelihood is reduced to ashes. From this immeasurable tragedy beauty emerges. The film's ending is symbolic of the kind of beauty that should never have been stripped from the true meaning of family. For those who choose to lock their doors in the hope of shutting out the ugliness that surrounds us, be it but for a few treasured hours and seek escapism in films that even vaguely vie for decent moral values, A Walk in the Clouds is a gift, and each performing artist a vessel of perfection. Aitana Sanchez-Gijon who plays Victoria reminded me of a younger Sophia Loren. Giancarlo Giannini masterfully portrayed the role of the kind of father who used to be worthy of that title. The incomparable Anthony Quinn adds the De La Creme to Creme. Angelica Aragon is as graceful as she is beautiful. Keanu Reeves becomes Paul Sutton. Paul Sutton is Keanu Reeves - humble and honorable. The film is energizing and morally invigorating - pure oxygen. I loved it!!Through the Eyes of a South African Woman and Other Children
