Movie Review: A CONTRIBUTOR TO AMERICAN DANCE HISTORY
Summary: 5 Stars
I have no idea of how this tribute to Ailey will strike those who know his work well. I do not. For me it was both enlightening and invigorating. At least from the examples here given, he worked out of a healthy mainstream to create his own variation on many themes. The dancers seem to do very well what they were supposed to do and were very likely to be able to perform in other styles as needed. I should think the Charlie Parker piece will resonate most with the casual viewer although it would seem to me that identifying characters in the dance with specific real life models will detract from one's pleasure. It is the dancer as symbol of emotional states that creates the impact not the reality of any particular person.
Overall, then, a very good way for those unfamiliar with Ailey's contributions to begin to appreciate them. I should think others, as with some of the reviewers, will enjoy seeing again the unrepeatable performances of these particular artists.

TRIBUTE TO ALVIN AILEY - DVD MovieLegendary choreographer Alvin Ailey is the subject of this well-balanced Tribute. Three of the four dances--"For Bird with Love", "Witness," and "Memoria"--are Ailey's, and the program concludes with Ulysses Dove's "Episodes." Each is eloquently introduced by Judith Jamison, and each demonstrates the joyous, affectionate atmosphere that Ailey's work always seemed to generate. "For Bird with Love," a dance interpretation of the life of seminal jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker, is probably the best-known and best-loved of the items presented here. Ailey always relied on an element of rather camp Broadway glitz to carry his ideas beyond the hardcore audience for modern dance, and much of the work presented here is closer to Cats than to Cunningham. Overall, though, these dances are superbly structured, graceful edifices that transcend their showbiz influences, and there are few examples of the craft that are so extrovertly welcoming to the viewer. --Roger Thomas, Amazon.co.uk
