This is probably Neville Shute's most romantic and finest work and as a love story it is so enduring. The lead's from Bryan Brown as Joe Harman and Helen Morse as Jean Paget are fabulous and you are so attached to these characters you are in there pitching the whole way through they are both so heroic in their own quiet ways. Gordon Jackson is extremely well cast as the lawyer and confidant Noel Strachan. I think many women fell in love with Bryan Brown as Joe Harman. Jean is informed of an inheritance and through the business and friendship relationship she forms with the lawyer she re-tells the story of what happened to her during World War II. In 1939 Jean had gone to Kuala Lumpa, Malaya to be near her brother and got a job out there in an office and was having a wonderful time attending all the parties and social events. When war broke out she was 19 and stayed where she was thinking it would never reach that far. When it did Jean was trapped and captured by the Japanese. The Japanese Soldiers did not know what to do with this group of women and children and they spent a lot of time marching from one place to another hungry and sick. Eventually Jean meets Joe who is an Australian POW but it is working as a driver transporting goods for the Japanese as he has some mechanical knowledge should the aged trucks break down. He helps Jean, the baby she looks after and the other ladies with meagre supplies but eventually he is caught and cruelly punished. Jean thinks Joe is dead and once released from her captives returns to England and to her surprise an inheritance which originated from a relative in Australia. Jean and Joe after a lot of mistarts and heart stoppings for the viewer reunite again in a wonderful scene and location and then they try and forge a life together in the Outback...a tough place for women. Jean decides to make her life there with Joe but wants to update Alice Springs to somewhere women would want to live. Jean is very progressive for hr day an inspiration to all of us.
