Movie Reviews of A Tail Of Two CitiesMovie Review: 5 stars for the music, 2 stars for the DVD production Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great capture of the Mule at its best since the 90's with Woody--smokin' performances!! As you may or may not know, this DVD was released in Nov. 2007 and then pulled due to a manufacturing defect. I bought a copy the day it was originally released, so when I heard that the online seller would send me a free corrected copy as soon as the defect was fixed, I assumed that the problem in question was that the second set on Disc 1 was not working in surround sound mode. Even though my receiver was set on surround, it would default to stereo. This only happened on that particular DVD. I'm not sure about Disc 2, since I wanted to wait to get the corrected copy and just didn't bother to watch it.
So I finally received my corrected copy after waiting for almost a YEAR for the manufacturers to fix the defect, and guess what? SAME PROBLEM. The same second set of the Disc 1 won't play in surround!! So either 1) The DVD manufacturers are incompetent bozos, or 2) That part of the concert simply isn't possible to be encoded in surround sound, and the actual defect is something else that I had not come across or noticed. I sent an email to both the online seller and the record company that issued the DVD, and did not receive any response.
Either way, it's a great DVD, and I highly recommend it, especially if you are a Mule fan. Just beware that the surround sound will probably fail on parts of the concert. Again, it's 5 smokin' hours of music, so I haven't checked Disc 2 yet. Just thought I'd warn people about Disc 1, anyway.
Movie Review: Two tails, one great mule Summary: 5 Stars
Two wellfilmed, great sounding shows from one of the finest, most interesting live bands around. The first show from the "Deja Voodoo" tour in 2004 and the last show from the "High And Mighty" tour in '06.
Unlike the gorgous "The Deepest End" this is just the Mule doing what the do best. Playing in front of an audience and mixing wellcrafted, meaningful songs with intelligent, mindblowing jamming. And blending blues, southern rock, psychedelics, jazzfusion.
The versatile Warren Haynes, a prolific songwriter and master guitarist is at the center, supplemented by long time partner, the extraordinary Matt Abts on some powerful and subtle drums. Danny Louis displays some weirdness at the keys. These shows are also a kind of farewell to bassplayer Andy Hess, who left the band in autumn '08. Not as prolific and charismatic as the late, great Allan Woody, Andy is a very fine technical and funky player.
Although neither show may be the Mule at their shining best this is certainly an essential release for everyone into true spontaneous and creative Music.
Movie Review: +5 hours in guitar heaven. Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best music dvd's I've purchased in my whole life. I've always been a fan of Mr.Haynes & Mighty and this two disc set is priceless if you're into blues-rock guitar. The audio and video quality is outstanding and the songs are amazing. A few songs are present in both discs but these are different interpretations of the tracks showing the evolution of the Mule over a span of two years.
Mr. Haynes (I can't help feeling a sense of reverence when I mention his name) is himself larger than life, and if you're a guitar player you'll appreciate the chance to see excellent camera closeups on his hands performing wizardry on the fretboard, and eventually figure out some of his distinctive techniques and approaches to blues-rock.
Totally worth buying. The first thing I did after I watched the two dvd's was to back them up.
Tip for caring wives: If your man likes this type of music, this makes for a great gift. He will love it!!
Movie Review: ...for the true "Mule" fan! Summary: 5 Stars
If you're in to Gov't Mule and can't get enough of Warren Haynes guitar, you can not overlook buying this DVD. 2 concerts in different cities and over 5 hours of Mule - what's not to like? The band's performance is superb and the video/audio quality is quite good. This is a must have for the Mule fan!
Movie Review: Then and Now! Summary: 4 Stars
I kind of stumbled on to this band 4 years ago and really like their bluesy stuff the best, a little dark at times, but still good in their more rock music. Both are very good performances, old and new, but more polished in the newer concert. Very good audio and video for both concerts, the newer being the best. This DVD offers some superb performances of some now classic Gov't Mule songs. Get it, you won't be sorry.
I wish Amazon had a 3 Criteria rating that would make for a quicker and more accurate and fair rating of Cd's, DVD's and Blu-ray's.
1. Performance
2. Quality of Audio
3. Quality of Video (for DVD's and Blu-ray's)
Disc 1 Disc 2
1.**** 1.*****
2.**** 2.*****
3.**** 3.****
Bands that wish to have there performances recorded and recognised should be held to a standard. Poor audio, no matter how good the performance, is still a bad product. Those who would still purchase sub-standard audio quality recordings and rank that product highly are not doing the industry or the band justice. Demand better and we will get it, settle for less and that's what you'll get.
