Movie Reviews of A Song for Martin

Movie Review: a phenomenal film, full of love and grace
Summary: 5 Stars

this is, quite simply, one of the best movies i have ever seen in my life. whether you have had a loved one affected by the devastation of dementia or not, you cannot help but be moved by this tragic yet ultimately uplifting and life-affirming tale. i agree with other posters, never has a struggle with caretaking for a beloved mate or relative been so tenderly or realistically explored. neither martin's wife, nor martin, are depicted as noble saints, just ordinary people who discovered a passionate love late in life and who are ultimately, hastily and unfairly robbed of it. the scenes in the breathtaking, sun-lit dutch countryside where two once warring families are reunited through the power of love and forgiveness will melt your heart and stir your soul.

on a sidenote, this film will especially appeal to anyone who has ever played in an orchestra or studied a musical instrument, as martin is a celebrated composer/conductor and his devoted companion, barbara, an equally accomplished violinist...a large part of their relationship is explored and developed through their mutual love of classical music.

PLEASE rent or purchase this moving, wonderful, powerful, and important film. thank you.

Movie Review: Events Happen.Life is Crafted
Summary: 5 Stars

An unflinching and compassionate look at the unfolding of Alzheimer's in a dearly beloved with relevance for any number of events that can interrupt and change a beautiful life, challenge us to accept and adjust to what is and somehow lead us forward with grace and peace. As in real life, Martin, a celebrated composer and conductor, and his wife and partner in music, Barbara, are on their own, not by choice, to see it through as best they can. From afar we over simplify profound disability; Alzheimer's and dementia are just memory loss; paralysis is just a mobility issue..This film shows us plainly, but not brutally, that it involves so much more loss and change that is never talked about and rarely shared or seen outside the intimacy of caregivers. We don't have a big learning curve when our turn comes to see parents or our own beloveds through a challenge as profound as Martin & Barbara's. This film serves us all by giving us a chance to think ahead and be a little more ready when it happens to us. And, as other reviewers here have said, it gives affirmation and encouragement to those who are living it now.

Movie Review: A high recommendation.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have two parents with Alzheimer's Disease and was their primary caregiver for a substantial period of time. I read many things about this tragic disease, but learned more from this movie about where this disease will take you than from any other source. This movie is real, yet not difficult to watch. I appreciate that this film was made. Seeing the help I received from this film, I am inspired to tell my own parent's story. I recommend "A Song for Martin" to adults who want to know about this dread disease in a form that is non-threatening and easy to understand. I do not recommend it for youngsters. D. Olson

Movie Review: Beautifully done movie of a fatal disease
Summary: 5 Stars

Having been in the medical profession and dealt with Alzheimer's disease more times than I care to remember the movie was true to life and dealt with the disease and its impact on the the lives of two people in love. I have witnessed the impact on the families as well as the impact that this devistating disease has on the husband/wife or wife/husband. No Hollywood drama, but a true to life experience. The end is especially poignant; acceptance resignation and finality. This is a movie that should be of use in every physician's to help people understand Alzheimers and its impact.

Movie Review: Powerful, sad, and compelling
Summary: 5 Stars

A super-depressing, but well acted, and very engrossing Swedish drama about an late-middleaged couple struggling with the husband's sudden onset of Alzheimer's-based dementia. They are both high-level musicians, and the love of art intertwines their love for life, and each other. This film is very good and certainly worth watching (it's more of a Eurpoean art film than an American-style disease-of-the-month flick), but it is definitely a big old downer, so be prepared.
