Movie Reviews of A Secret AffairMovie Review: not great, but worth it Summary: 3 Stars
It's true that the casting of the two leads could have been better. That alone could have made this a 4-star movie. But it could easily have been worse too. We've all seen examples.
The love scene that drove one reviewer below to distraction is minimal, PG-level. Anybody who is bothered by a love scene as vanilla as this should stay away from love stories.
The other problem with this movie is the script (or maybe the novel--which I haven't read). We needed to see that she was about to marry the wrong man, not just be told so by a friend. We needed to fear for her and hope that she would avoid it before it was too late.
Also, the behavior of the new man could have been less nudgey. It was the wrong approach. The audience needed to want them to get together before she relented. And that would have solved the problem of convincing the audience that she was attracted to him. As it is, she appears to just fall into it with an "Oh well, why not?" attitude.
The scenes of Venice were brief but nice. They've certainly cleaned up the city since I was there and photographed it in 1979. Ireland was also nicely rendered. The depiction of the Balkans was stark and the people convincing. It's rare that the public gets to see such an honest presentation of the consequences of multiculturalism.
Bottom line: This is a movie worth having, especially for the price.
Movie Review: Losing Mr. Wrong Summary: 3 Stars
Just when you think your life is safe and planned, you meet unexpected yet needed life-changing situations. I'm glad that the storyline has explosive turn of events to make a not-so-exciting, predictable story intriguing.
Movie Review: Weak Summary: 2 Stars
The story is weak. The guy comes on strong in a way that would be very unattractive and drive the girl away from him. So it is very unrealistic that the girl would fall in love him with. I found it to be pretty boring.
Movie Review: Sorely disappointed! Summary: 1 Stars
Make no mistake, if I could've typed a '0' as a rating, I would have done so!
This movie was poor in all the ways I value a film. Anytime a sexual encounter has to be inserted to keep the attention of the audience, it's a loser. As soon as I saw the encounter begin to happen, I was turned off to the movie and turned it off! It was immediately fodder for the trash can. In this film it only took the mindless producers 15 minutes to stage a sexual scene! Any real value it could've had was lost once the sex was introduced. Sex has it's place in the lives of people. It loses its beauty and uniqueness in a relationship when it's indulged in, outside of married life. Was certainly never meant to be engaged in with an audience! How crude and gross!
On the other hand, Michael Landon Jr., working with Janette Oke's books, was highly effective and successful in producing a superbly acted film with all the realities of life depicted in a hopefilled, morally clean atmosphere.
How very offensive and disappointing I found this film! I felt this it to be sleasy and grossly lacked the character development that transforms a film into a great movie. I trashed my copy of Secret Affair, regretful I'd purchased it before having rented it first. I learned my lesson!
Movie Review: I wouldn't bother watching for free... Summary: 1 Stars
Where do I start? This was bad on so many levels. First off, the story
was, well, boring. I don't mean because it lacked action - of course it was a
love story which we always enjoy more than any action flick, but this one was just blah. The characters were not likable. We (my wife and I) couldn't empathize with them at all. The acting was mediocre and stiff. The cinematography was amateurish with
lots of harsh back lighting, even during intimate moments that you
would expect to be soft and gentle. The story was entirely and oh so
predictable with, again, amateurish aspects that rendered it entirely
unrealistic, and worst of all was the sound track. The dialog was
difficult to hear and understand to begin with but they overlaid a
CONSTANT musical score that was too loud and mostly out of place and rendered the dialog even more difficult to hear.
I definitely don't recommend it.
