Movie Reviews of A Scanner DarklyMovie Review: Brilliant, bitter and true to life Summary: 5 Stars
Without going into spoilers and plot devices, this is a movie about totally unprincipled authorities trying to stop the use of an illegal and lethal drug, rather like our police forces trying to stop the use of cocaine or meth. The old "any means necessary" trick, which has become so much a part of today's police force and military. Philip K Dick has shown himself to be a true visionary in his other works, and to be honest, I can see this happening today as well as in the near future. After all, as long as the authorities get their men, who cares who gets hurt. Right?
Movie Review: The next cult movie Summary: 5 Stars
The originality of this movie is the fact that it is made as an animation where actors do look like themselves. One can easily "see": Winona Ryder, Robert Downey, Jr., Keanu Reeves, Rory Cochrane, Woody Harrelson. The cast is absolutely fantastic. It is as if every actor that has offended Hollywood by misbehaving by using unhealthy amounts of drugs, is in this movie - which makes it cool. Every actor in this masterpiece is so good, that to a some degree, they appear also play a part of themselves - which makes them courageous. This DVD is a keeper!
Movie Review: Dick Done Right Summary: 5 Stars
Not a fan of Richard Linkletter.
Not a fan of Rotoscoping.
NOT a fan of Keanu Reeves.
With the possible exception of (Confession d'un) Barjo from France, (ALERT, ALTERT, NOT ON DVD, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN) the most accurate film of a PKD book ever.
Don't even watch Minority Report or Total Recall.
Imposter was an underappreciated PKD film.
Blade Runner was a great film with the Spirit of Phil looming large despite the noir tone that was totally alien to him.
This one has it all.
Movie Review: What would grow crooked you can't make straight Summary: 5 Stars
I was worried about sitting through the rotoscoped animation, but I ended up liking the effect for this film. The entire cast is excellent (even Keanu, whoaah!) and the plot is great, as it gets progressively more complex and confusing to the point that you will have no idea what is going on until the end when there is an epiphanic moment of clarity. This film is unique and is truly a must for fans of literary sci-fi. If you are easily confused or need your cinematic and literary art spoon-fed to you, stay away.
Movie Review: Another one in the PKD plus column Summary: 5 Stars
I would rank this movie as the 2nd best PK Dick translation to the big screen (#1 being Blade Runner). While not an action film like Blade Runner, it still captures the essence of the novel it is based on. Was glad to see PK Dick's estate included in the creation of the film.
You owe it to yourself to read the book this film is based on, if you haven't already. A Scanner Darkly
