Movie Reviews of A Scanner Darkly

Movie Review: RICHARD LINKLATER, OPUS 13
Summary: 5 Stars

***** 2006. Based on Philip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly and written and directed by Richard Linklater. Los Angeles, California, near future. An undercover cop starts to take the substance D drug, a new dangerous substance. He suffers soon from hallucinations that prevent him to concentrate on his job. If I was more than reluctant and dubious after having seen Robert Zemeckis's Beowulf (Unrated Director's Cut), I don't have with A SCANNER DARKLY the slightest reservation. Richard Linklater's decision to use the rotoscoping animation device in order to recreate the paranoid world of Philip K. Dick was a very smart idea. Without a doubt, the film is a masterpiece.

Movie Review: Darkly Scanner
Summary: 5 Stars

The reality in "A Scanner Darkly " is set by a surrealistic graphic novel appearance. It seems to make more sense that the messages conveyed in the movie be portrayed by the stylized animations rather than regular filming.
As other reviewers have noted, the story is about the perils of drugs and drug abuse. It doesn't give a romantic view. To quote Donna(Winnoa Ryder's character ) " winnning is easy" as retort for Bob ( Keanu Reaves character ) being called a "loser".
This movie isn't a morality play however, everyone from the top down had failings . The movie did not show a world of clear wrong/right , it showed varying degrees/shades of gray.

Ultimately, it seems to be how far a government will go to get what it wants.

Movie Review: Loved it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this movie and wanted to buy one, so I got it new and the shipment was super speedy! Great packaging and no problem with the dvd whatsoever. I just bought a book and hope to get it soon, can't wait to start reading it, since it's only sold online and it's not checkable in libraries yet.

Get this movie if you love the actors in the movie like I do. I'm a Keanu fan. And love to see in Animated format. This movie was very interesting b/c they used actors and CG ontop, to create this movie. It's facinating how so much work goes into making a movie.

Their prices here are a lot cheaper than other places, so buying has been very nice. I hope to continue shopping here in the future.

Movie Review: Desolation, Inc.
Summary: 5 Stars

A Scanner Darkly is a masterpeice of storytelling and I'm sure Phillip K. Dick would be very proud of this movie. The animation and the rotoscoping technique maybe a gimmick, but it works. The scramble suits, what can you say? They are in a pyschedelic class by themselves.
This is the best acting performance of Keanu Reeves career and his supporting cast is equal to the task. Kudos to all of them, especially Winona Ryder.
Lastly, thank you Richard Linkletter, it is only right that the filmmaker that gave us Slacker and Dazed and Confused would create this tribute to those who have fallen before.

Movie Review: very faithful
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is the most faithful adaptation of a PKD story out there (book or short story). That being said, if you didn't like the book (or don't have the patience to read the book in the first place), you will not like the movie. It is *that* faithful.

It's a dark, sad, story, and combined the the aforementioned faithfulness, it probably does not have much appeal to a mainstream audience. It is decidedly not one of those "sort of inspired by a PKD story" action movies. If you think that's a bad thing, then skip this one. If you think that's a good thing, as I do, then be sure to check it out.
