Movie Reviews of A Perfect WorldMovie Review: Subtexted in this great Eastwood Flick is... Summary: 3 Stars
....no one *really knows* what it takes to be a good parent even though we think we do. Costner's bad guy turns out to be the best parent figure in the movie, caring for and becoming a friend to the kid in the Casper outfit, (in spite of the lack of nutrition in mustard sammiches, truly it was the thought that counted) but that was a symptom of how bad his father was to him....for the record, I was all for serious damage done to that brutal black father, but Eastwood made like punishment from Butch(Costner) would be pathologically driven.... and then the questions arise. *How can* a pathologically evil man be a good parent or *can* a pathologiclly evil man be a good parent? In the end, the Buzz kid seems to have learned to love the man who kidnaps him, like he would a parent ....if you however did not want to think too deeply about the characters' raison d'etres, Eastwood serves up an old fashioned road chase movie in the Texas of Kennedy era 1962-63. A charming bad guy in stolen vehicles being chased down the dusty Texas roads by the bumbling good guys handcuffed to the system in my opinion has more entertainment value than half the stuff out there in the movies nowadays.
Movie Review: Not perfect, but rather good Summary: 3 Stars
At 130 minutes, A Perfect World is certainly overlong - one character takes even longer to die than Marlon Brando did in Mutiny on the Bounty - but compared to most films that attempt to pair box-office giants and simply ending up alienating both star's followings, it's actually rather good. Clint Eastwood the director fares better than Eastwood the actor, who could quite easily be cut out of the film, having little to do and doing it with minimum interest. Ditto Laura Dern's psychologist, who seems to be there solely to give Eastwood someone to talk to, but Kevin Costner is surprisingly good as the maladjusted convict on the run, coming into his own in a scene where he terrorises a black family (it's at this point you can just hear the film's box-office potential nosedive) with T.J. Lowther convincingly unmovielike as the young Jehovah's Witness he takes hostage and shows how to have fun. A minor film, perhaps, but with a darkness behind the humour that recalls Thunderbolt and Lightfoot it's well worth checking out.
Movie Review: Average Summary: 3 Stars
I saw this film last night. I'm on a streak where I watch every Clint Eastwood movie out there. There is quite some crime scene on this one. However, I don't think I will be recommending this movie to anyone. I really couldn't understand why Costner was as hard on the black family as he was. I may lack knowledge on criminals. I dont recommend this movie to anyone unless you must see every Clint Eastwood film made. I recommend "Absolute Power" instead of "A Perfect World"
Rating - 2.5 Stars
Movie Review: Below average, a few disturbances Summary: 2 Stars
OK...were to start. I didn't recommend this to my fiance and her sister to watch. The scene at the farmer's house before the ending was way too disturbing. It was unbelievable that the film-makers included several instances of child abuse and neglect near the end of the movie (the kid, Cleveland didn't seem to do anything wrong to deserve to be bashed like that by his father). The man played by Costner cared for his kidnapee, but had to be negligant at times to people to avoid being detained by the cops (i.e. stealing a Stationwagon from a family, allowing the kid to steal a costume from a store, being tyrannical enough to duct tape a family that gave them one day of "kind hospitality"). The movie had some decent moments to it, but it was too disturbing to watch. On the positive side...Clint Eastwood did a great role in the movie. I don't believe that Jehova's Witnesses is a true religon. I believe that Christianity is the only true religion.
Movie Review: Dismal movie Summary: 2 Stars
I'm surprised that others have reviewed this movie with high rankings. It's basically a mediocre movie, with not much of a story, nothing much that is enjoyable or uplifting, and some questionable content.
For most of the movie, Kevin Costner's character is chain-smoking cigarettes, cussing, and generally being a bad influence in front of the young boy he takes hostage, as they travel across Texas evading the law and breaking the law together. There's nothing of value that comes out of this movie. I'm glad I only paid a small amount to rent it, and not blow more money and time in the theatre.
